The attacks of September 11th, which killed thousands of civilians and first responders, will soon be 21 years old. Many of these victims continue to deal with the after-effects of the attacks on a daily basis, including the trauma they endured, survivor’s guilt, and physical injuries.
This year, President Biden will pay his respects on the anniversary of the tragedy by laying a wreath and making a speech at the Pentagon. Vice President Kamala Harris will attend a memorial service at the National September 11th Memorial in New York City, while First Lady Jill Biden will speak at the Flight 93 National Memorial Observance in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
In the Attacks, How Many Lives Were Lost?
According to reports, 2,997 people died in the Twin Towers, Pentagon, and United Flight 93 crash in Pennsylvania on September 11th. In addition, during the four attacks, 19 hijackers committed murder-suicide.
412 first responders and 343 firefighters died trying to free people trapped in the towers after the attacks.
Even though over 6,000 people were hurt in the attacks, many survived thanks to the valiant efforts of first responders.
A memorial honoring the lives lost on September 11th can be found on the site of what was once the World Trade Center in New York City.
Regrettably, over 20 years after the attacks, some victims are still located and identified. Dorothy Morgan of Hempstead, New York, was one of two positively identified victims last year. The other victim’s family has asked that he not be identified in the media.
Chief medical examiner Dr. Barbara A. Sampson released a statement saying, “Twenty years ago, we made a promise to the families of World Trade Center victims to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to identify their loved ones, and with these two new identifications, we continue to fulfill that sacred obligation.”
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York City has stated that more identifications may be possible with the advent of modern DNA technology.
