After A Trial In Los Angeles Harvey Weinstein Was Given An Extended Prison Term Of 16 Years

After his December Los Angeles trial, Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 16 more years in jail. On Thursday, LA County Judge Lisa Lench sentenced Weinstein to 16 years in jail, to be served after his 23-year New York prison term.

The Los Angeles sentence assures that Weinstein, who is 70, will spend the rest of his life in prison unless his lawyers appeal. “He’s a 70-year-old man in horrible health,” his counsel told the judge before sentencing.

After the jury convicted Weinstein of three felonies for forcing himself on an Italian actress in her Los Angeles hotel room in February 2013, he faced up to 18 years in jail.

The jury deadlocked on Jennifer Seibel Newsom’s rape and oral copulation charges and Lauren Young’s sexual battery by restraint charge after ten days of deliberations. Three charges were mistrials.

“I maintain that I’m innocent,” according to the Associated Press, ” Weinstein told the judge before sentencing. I did not rape Jane Doe 1. She doesn’t know me, and I don’t remember her Money…

He added, “She perjured herself. Fiction. Jane Doe 1 acts. She can cry. Please don’t imprison me forever. I’m unworthy. This case has various issues. Too many loopholes. Very many issues. Setup. This behaviour is inappropriate.”

After the punishment, Jane Doe 1 told the Hollywood Reporter she was Russian actress Evgeniya Chernyshova. According to the newspaper, Evgeniya Chernyshova: Harvey Weinstein’s LA rape case victim reveals identity.

In a Los Angeles hotel room, Chernyshova recalled 2013. Weinstein unexpectedly visited Chernyshova’s hotel room after an Oscars week event, despite being assured by the hotel receptionist that they may chat tomorrow. “He says, ‘Hey, Harvey Weinstein. Enter. Discuss. “I’m not fucking you; I just have to talk to you,” she added.

Chernyshova regretted opening her hotel room door for ten years. Weinstein opened his pants inside, making her insane. I kept showing him my kids’ pictures to say, “I have kids; please don’t do that.” But he did. He assaulted me in the bedroom, pulled me to the toilet, and raped me.”

Chernyshova suffered from depression, heavy drinking, and divorce after the alleged rape. She made her allegations, which formed the basis of the Los Angeles trial, just before the 10-year statute of limitations expired.

Weinstein was found guilty in New York nearly three years before the Los Angeles verdict. He received a 23-year sentence. Weinstein is appealing his New York conviction this summer. If that appeal succeeds, the Los Angeles sentence may keep 70-year-old Weinstein in prison. Weinstein may serve the New York term until 2043 if the request fails.

Following a Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times exposé by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey showed Weinstein had paid off sexual assault accusations for years, over 100 women, including actresses Ashley Judd, Annabella Sciorra, and Asia Argento, have accused him of sexual harassment or assault.

Evgeniya Chernyshova’s post-sentencing interview and Jane Doe 1’s identification were added Feb. 24.
