Alicent Hightower Cause Of Death: How Does Alicent Hightower Die In The House Of The Dragon Books??

Alicent Hightower has played a significant role in every season of House of the Dragon, and her influence has only grown as the show has progressed. The series is a prequel to Game of Thrones and takes place 200 years before the events of that show, so we know that everyone we meet is going to die. The fate of Alicent Hightower remains a mystery in House of the Dragon, as does the cause of her demise.

A Recap Of Alicent Hightower’s Story In House Of The Dragon

Initially in the series, Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent were close friends, almost like sisters. Until Alicent consoled King Viserys after the loss of his first wife, Aemma, and he decided to marry her.

Alicent and Rhaenyra’s relationship has deteriorated over the years, especially after Alicent had a son named Aegon, who many people thought should be the successor to the Iron Throne instead of Rhaenyra. Alicent’s discovery that Rhaenyra had slept with Criston Cole and his subsequent brazen lies about it in episode 5 was the last straw. After a 10-year time leap, in episode 6 Rhaenyra is ready to extend a large olive branch to Alicent in an effort to restore their strained relationship, but the queen rejects it.

Alicent has been playing an important role in the events leading up to the start of the Targaryen Civil War, which has been gradually growing throughout House of the Dragon. Alicent makes sure she finds out first when King Viserys passes away in his sleep so that she and her allies can move swiftly to have her son crowned as King Aegon II and prevent any knowledge of this from reaching Rhaenyra on Dragonstone.

Rhaenyra is furious that the throne was taken away from her, which doesn’t come as a surprise. Even though Alicent sends a generous offer to let Rhaenyra stay as the Lady of Dragonstone, Rhaenyra refuses, so there will be war. In the midst of the fighting, Rhaenyra’s men capture King‘s Landing, and despite killing many of Alicent’s allies, Rhaenyra decides to save her childhood friend.

While Alicent herself survives the events of the Dance of the Dragons, she loses every single one of her children and all but one of her grandchildren in the conflict and its aftermath. When Aegon II dies from poison, his son Aegon III ascends to the throne. Tyland Lannister, the King’s Hand, has Alicent imprisoned in Maegor’s Holdfast, a castle within a castle located in the Red Keep.

According to the novels, Alicent perishes in the midst of the Winter Fever epidemic that destroys Westeros in the wake of the Targaryen Civil War. Alicent spends her final year alone with her septa (female priest), servants, and guards after losing everyone she cared about over the years leading up to the battle.

Alicent starts talking to herself because she is lonely, and she ends up hating the color green, which has come to represent her and Aegon’s side in the Dance of the Dragons. Eventually, Alicent would succumb to the Winter Fever that kills one-fourth of Westeros’s population every year. The disease makes people feel hot and cold at the same time, then makes them delirious and kills them four days after the first symptoms show up.
