American Forces Destroy A Chinese Spy Balloon They Believe Was Conducting Surveillance
According to NBC News’ reporting, on Saturday the United States military shot down a Chinese surveillance balloon that had been flying over the United States for several days. The Pentagon has not officially acknowledged that the balloon was successfully shot down.
The high-altitude balloon, about the size of three school buses, was brought down over American territory. Television images show the balloon exploding into a little fireball before sinking to the water’s surface. It has been reported by NBC News that efforts would be made to retrieve the wreckage.
On Saturday afternoon, the FAA issued a ground stop for some areas in North Carolina and South Carolina, and they also cut down some airspace in both states. Stopping the departures was done “to support the Department of Defense in a national security initiative,” a spokesman told CNBC.
On Saturday, Vice President Joe Biden finally addressed the balloon, telling reporters, “We’re going to take care of it.” Here’s the official tweet confirming the news:

On Wednesday, the balloon was first sighted above Billings, Montana. The Pentagon debated shooting down the balloon earlier this week, according to defense officials, but ultimately opted against it after being briefed by Vice President Biden. Gen. Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Lloyd Austin, Secretary of Defense, were consulted before the final decision was reached.

On Friday, the Chinese foreign ministry stated the balloon was a civilian weather blimp used for scientific research that had strayed off course due to wind. It claimed the situation occurred due to something beyond its control, a “force majeure.”
The United States government officials have flatly denied this claim. Thursday night, a senior Pentagon official informed reporters that the mysterious item was unmistakably a surveillance balloon flying above secure facilities in order to gather intelligence.
The official stated, “We have acknowledged the PRC statement of remorse, but the presence of this balloon in our airspace is a clear infringement of our sovereignty and of international law and is unacceptable that this has occurred.”
