Representatives for Heche, 53, acknowledged on Friday afternoon that she was “brain dead,” which is the legal definition of death in the state of California. A previous announcement confirmed that Heche’s life support would be turned off. It is believed that her heart was being kept beating so that organ donation might take place.

Homer, Heche’s 20-year-old eldest son, published a statement on Friday evening on behalf of himself and his 13-year-old half-brother, Atlas.

“My brother Atlas and I lost our Mom,” he told People. “After six days of almost unbelievable emotional swings, I am left with a deep, wordless sadness. Hopefully, my mom is free from pain and beginning to explore what I like to imagine as her eternal freedom.”

He added, “Over those six days, thousands of friends, family, and fans made their hearts known to me. I am grateful for their love, as I am for the support of my Dad, Coley, and my stepmom Alexi who continue to be my rock during this time.”

Homer Heche said, “Mother, I love you. Rest in peace.”

In an Instagram post earlier on Friday, the actor’s pal Nancy Davis said, “Heaven has a new Angel. My loving, kind, fun, endearing, and beautiful friend @anneheche went to heaven. I will miss her terribly and cherish all the beautiful memories we have shared. Anne was always the kindest, most thoughtful person who always brought out the best in me … My heart is broken.”

After slamming her car into a house in Los Angeles on August 5, her spokesperson said that Heche was in “stable” condition, giving rise to hope that she would make a full recovery. According to the rescuers who freed her from the rubble, she even managed to communicate with them before she was sent to the hospital.

But the actress shortly afterward lost consciousness, and on 8 August, representatives provided an update, claiming Heche was in an “extremely critical condition” and had gone into a coma. On Friday, her family released a statement saying she was not expected to live but was being kept on life support to see if her organs could be given.
