McCullough’s publisher announced his death on Monday, noting that the best-selling author and renowned historian had died at the age of 89 after writing biographies of former President John Adams and former President Harry Truman, respectively.
A Facebook page maintained by his publisher, Simon, and Schuster, reports that McCullough died on Sunday at his Hingham, Massachusetts, home surrounded by his five children.

Many of McCullough’s best-known works are about American history, including the building of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Wright brother’s first flight.
According to his biography on Simon and Schuster, the citation for his Yale University honorary degree read, “As a historian, he paints with words, giving us pictures of the American people that live, breathe, and above all confront the fundamental issues of courage, achievement, and moral character.”
McCullough won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for his biography of the 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman, and the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for his biography of the 2nd President of the United States, John Adams.
For “The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal” and “Mornings on Horseback,” McCullough received National Book Awards.
McCullough received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award, in 2016.
McCullough was born in 1933 in Pittsburgh. He studied English literature at Yale University, receiving a bachelor’s degree. A job at Sports Illustrated was his first job out of college in New York City.

In 1954, he married Rosalee Barnes, and they had five children together. 89-year-old Rosalee Barnes McCullough died in June of this year.
