On Sunday, prominent Democratic women urged President Joe Biden and members of Congress to defend abortion rights across the country in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. This decision has heightened political tensions between the federal government and the states.
Since the Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 ruling that recognized women’s constitutional right to abortion on Friday, two Democratic progressives, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have urged Biden to use federal land as a safe haven for abortion in states that ban or severely restrict the practice.

Two Democratic Women Call On Biden For Abortion Rights
Two progressive Democrats, have encouraged Joe Biden to make use of federal land as a secure base for abortions in states that either outright outlaw the practice or place strict restrictions on it.
On NBC’s Meet the Press, Ocasio-Cortez said, “Forcing women to carry pregnancies against their will, will kill them.”
Stacey Abrams, a Democrat running for governor of Georgia, recently called on her colleagues in Congress to make Roe v. Wade permanent by rejecting the filibuster rule that has allowed Republicans to block such an effort for the past month in the United States Senate.
Abrams stated on CNN’s State of the Union, “We know that the rights to choose should not be divvied up amongst states and that the sinister practice of taking constitutional rights and allowing each state to decide the quality of your citizenship is wrong.”
In a separate interview, she said, “I would reject the notion that this is the will of the people.”
Senator Elizabeth Warren is now questioning the legitimacy of the Supreme Court.

Democrats have also pushed Biden to fight for the right of women to have access to an abortion pill despite state efforts to restrict access to it.
South Dakota’s Republican governor, Kristi Noem, has vowed to uphold the state’s ban on the mail-order provision of abortion pills. This makes South Dakota one of 13 conservative states with such a ban.
“What the Supreme Court said was that the Constitution does not give a woman the right to have an abortion. That means that at each state they will make the decision how they handle these situations,” Noem said. “I love that about this country, that we have a very limited federal government,” she said.
Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who has sued to prevent the enforcement of the state’s strict abortion ban from 1931 in the wake of Roe v. Wade’s overturn, has urged the Biden administration to do everything in its power to protect reproductive rights.
“I am urging every pro-choice leader to use every tool in their toolbox. So I’m hopeful and I believe that the Biden administration is going to do that,” Whitmer said.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, however, claimed the Supreme Court ruling would have no effect on Senate rules or the upcoming elections in November because voters are more concerned about inflation, crime, and immigration.
