Is Dracula Untold 2 Coming Out? Dark Universe Future EXPLAINED

The 2014 American dark fantasy action movie Dracula Untold was written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless and directed for the first time by Gary Shore. Instead of following the scenario of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, this Dracula film reboot tells the story of the title character’s ancestry.

Vlad III “the Impaler” Drăculea assumes the monstrous persona of Dracula in this new rendition. Sarah Gadon, Dominic Cooper, Art Parkinson, and Charles Dance round out the cast as the film’s supporting players.

Will Luke Evans reprise his role as Dracula in Dracula Untold 2 and how will the Dark Universe evolve?

Must go for-

As Dracula: Year Zero, the origin story of the title monster, Dracula Untold began life as a project. Sam Worthington (Avatar) was slated to star in Alex Proyas’ film, but Universal scrapped the production due to budgetary concerns. Luke Evans joined on to play Dracula once the film was reworked, with Gary Shore taking over as director.

The development of prospective shared cinematic worlds has become an increasing concern for studios following the success of the MCU. Frankenstein’s Monster and the Invisible Man are just two of the famous monsters that Universal has planned to feature in a new cinematic world.

As a result, the filmmakers decided to modify Dracula Untold so that it could be incorporated into this new world. Master Vampire, a character modeled after Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, was introduced in new sequences as a linking character. While Charlie Cox (Daredevil) had a chance to play this character, he had to be replaced by a younger actor because of the character’s age.

Even though Dracula Untold was a huge success and Luke Evans earned excellent reviews, there has been no evidence of a follow-up. Below we have mentioned what we know so far about Dracula Untold 2 and its Dark Universe ties.

The Mummy Took Dracula Untold’s Spot as the “First” Entry in the Dark Universe Film

Since Dracula Untold was rewritten at the last minute and the studio was still unsure of its plans, it’s standing as the beginning of The Dark Universe has always felt precarious. As soon as Alex Kurtzman was brought in to direct Tom Cruise in The Mummy, it was decided that the new Dark Universe would begin with The Mummy.

This would have given the filmmakers complete freedom to reimagine Dracula, but the largely poor reviews and lackluster box office performance of The Mummy put the Dark Universe’s future in jeopardy right away. Filming on Bride of Frankenstein, starring Angelina Jolie and Javier Bardem, was put on hold, and it appeared that the project had been quietly terminated over the following months.

The Invisible Man Was a Game-changing Moment for Blumhouse’s Dark Universe

In 2020, Blumhouse released a low-budget remake of The Invisible Man, directed by Leigh Whannell, which received positive reviews and did well at the box office. When critics complained about The Mummy and the Dark Universe notion for turning character-driven horror stories into flashy action movies, Whannell’s film was a return to the character’s original horror roots.

Whannell’s Invisible Man features Elisabeth Moss as a woman haunted by her presumably dead scientific ex-boyfriend, who had developed a technique to become invisible.

Universal and Blumhouse are also working on a Frankenstein reboot, an Invisible Woman feature, a mysterious crossover project called Dark Army, and a standalone film about Dracula’s henchman Renfield.

However, it appears that ambitions for an interconnected monster universe have been abandoned, and each picture will stand on its own.

Is Dracula Untold 2 a Possibility?

Despite Universal’s constant reorganization, Dracula Untold 2 seems to have taken a stake through the heart when it was determined that The Mummy would be the first film in the Dark Universe.

Even though Dracula Untold ended with an obvious setup for a sequel, a follow-up to that film is highly doubtful given its poor performance and its rejected tie to the now-failed Dark Universe. Despite Luke Evans’ statement that he would be open to returning, little has been heard about a sequel since 2014.

It became clearer in 2021 that Universal had plans for a sci-fi western adaptation of Dracula to be directed by the director of Eternals, Chloe Zhao, while also continuing development on a more straightforward adaptation of Bram Stoker’s iconic novel to be directed by Karyn Kusama and produced by Blumhouse.

Dracula Untold 2 appears to be even more dead than it was before Universal revealed two new Dracula projects, as well as the Renfield spinoff about Dracula’s servant, in 2020.
