Driver Homero Zamorano and Three Others Charged as Toll Hits 53

The bodies of at least 53 people were found “stacked” inside the tractor-trailer of a truck near San Antonio, Texas. This may be the deadliest incident of human trafficking in the United States in recent memory.

Officials report that 16 more people, including four children, were taken to area hospitals. Three suspects have been arrested by law enforcement. There is currently an investigation being conducted by US Homeland Security.

The “tragic loss of life” in Texas was described as “horrifying and heartbreaking” by President Joe Biden and “horrific human tragedy” by San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg on Tuesday.

It was confirmed by Mexico’s foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, that some of the victims who perished in the truck’s scorching interior had been identified and their nationalities determined. Among the dead are 22 Mexicans, 7 Guatemalans, and 2 Hondurans.

In a press conference scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at the southern border, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is expected to discuss the “ongoing response to President Biden’s growing border crisis,” as stated by his office.
