The pills are believed to be connected to a drug trafficking ring connected to the Sinaloa Cartel and are worth between $15 and $20 million on the black market.
“This massive seizure disrupted the flow of dangerous amounts of fentanyl into our streets and probably saved many lives,” DEA Special Agent in Charge Bill Bodner said in a statement.
About two-thirds of the record 107,622 drug overdose deaths last year had traces of fentanyl, a dangerous opioid up to 100 times stronger than morphine, according to the CDC.
Drug trafficking organizations frequently use Los Angeles as a staging area because of the city’s proximity to the Mexican border and the abundance of airports and freeways that make it simple to transport illegal substances to other cities and towns in the United States.
Over three times as many fentanyl pills were seized by the DEA in the greater Los Angeles area in 2019 as they had been in 2020. About 1.5 million fentanyl pills have been seized this year.
