Gabby Douglas Early Life
Gabrielle Christina Victoria Douglas was born in Newport News, Virginia on December 31, 1995. Her parents, Timothy Douglas, and Natalie Hawkins-Douglas, raised her in Virginia Beach. She has two older sisters, Arielle and Joyelle, and one older brother, Johnathan.
Douglas began gymnastics at the age of six after her sister encouraged their mother to enroll her in gymnastics classes. She quickly advanced through her training, and by the age of eight, she had won the Level 4 all-around gymnastics title at the 2004 Virginia State Championships.
Her future in gymnastics appeared bright, so when she was fourteen, she relocated to Des Moines, Iowa, to train full-time with renowned gymnastics coach Liang Chow, despite the fact that her family stayed in Virginia. She resided in Iowa with Travis and Missy Parton and their four daughters; one of the Parton girls also trained with Chow. She has been homeschooled since third grade due to her demanding training regimen.

Douglas’ 2012 season only got better as she was a member of the US team that won gold at the Pacific Rim Championships; won gold in uneven bars, silver in the all-around, and bronze in the floor at the US National Championships; and then secured the only guaranteed spot on the US women’s Olympic gymnastics team by placing first in the all-around at the 2012 Olympic Trials.
