Gabby Petito’s Cause of Death was Manual Strangulation, Says the Coroner

On Tuesday, the Wyoming coroner said that Gabby Petito died of “manual strangulation” at least three weeks before her remains were discovered, while a worldwide manhunt continued for the woman’s missing fiancé.

The body of the Long Island woman was found on September 19 in the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, and Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue had already ruled her death a homicide.

Even though Blue cited state legislation limiting how much information he could release, the official cause of death for the 22-year-old was not revealed until Tuesday.

Blue wrote in a note dated October 5 and submitted the following Tuesday that Petito’s cause of death was “Death by manual strangulation/throttling.” Blue classified Petito’s death as a homicide.

According to Blue‘s statement to the press, “Our initial determination is the body was in the wilderness for three to four weeks” before she was found, placing her time of death in mid to late August.

While speaking to the media, Blue avoided answering questions about who might have killed the victim. However, the coroner‘s report gave the impression that Petito had been killed at home.

“This is only one of many deaths around the country of people involved in domestic violence, and, unfortunately, the other deaths do not get as much coverage as this one,” Blue said.

A lawyer for the Laundrie family, Steven Bertolino, has repeatedly stated that Brian Laundrie is not a suspect in Petito’s abduction or death.

“Gabby Petito’s death at such a young age is a tragedy,” Bertolino said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

“While Brian Laundrie is currently charged with the unauthorized use of a debit card belonging to Gabby, Brian is only considered a person of interest in relation to Gabby Petito’s demise. At this time, Brian is still missing, and when he is located, we will address the pending fraud charge against him.”

Police say Petito returned to his parent’s house in North Port, Florida, on September 1 without his fiancée Laundrie after they had been on a cross-country road trip and posted their adventures on social media.
