Harry Belafonte was raised in Jamaica by his parents after being born in Harlem to parents of Jamaican descent. He returned to the United States as a child but had difficulty readjusting to life there. He skipped high school to join the Navy, where he served throughout WWII.
Belafonte was motivated to become an actor after returning from military service and seeing a performance at the American Negro Theater. He attended the New School for Social Research in New York City, where he was classmates with future Hollywood stars, including Tony Curtis, Walter Matthau, and Marlon Brando.

He had applied for a rental at 300 West End Avenue, close to West 74th Street. Despite Harry’s status as one of the world’s highest-paid and most renowned celebrities, the landlord denied his application because he didn’t want black tenants.
The landlord initially considered renting to Harry since he had mistaken him for a white guy. His perspective changed as soon as he learned differently. The proprietor’s name was Ramfis Trujillo. At Ramfi’s birth, Rafael Ramfis served as President of the Dominican Republic; he died in that position a few years later.
