We may have to wait a bit before we see the return of Invincible season 2. Amazon Studios‘ animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman and CoryWalker’s R-rated comic series is getting further episodes. However, as work continues, we don’t know when it will return to our screens.
Still, we’re eagerly awaiting the return of Mark Grayson and the rest of the cast and crew. The first season was a huge hit among viewers, and we’d argue that it was the best Prime Video show of the year in terms of ratings.
The first season of Invincible was fantastic, and if it wants to be even better in season 2, it needs to be given as much attention as possible. So, Amazon, please take your time.
We’ve assembled all the information you need to know about Invincible season 2, including its cast members, possible plot, and more.
What do we know about Invincible’s second season while we’re waiting? As part of an interview for Diabolical, The Boys’ animated spin-off series, writer Simon Racioppa gave us an update on Invincible season 2. The actor who plays Omni-Man J.K. Simmons hinted that the show’s second season would begin filming soon.
Invincible Season 2: Release Date
Season 2 of Invincible has yet to be announced by Amazon Studios.
Season 2 and 3 of Invincible were both announced on April 29, 2021. Moreover, head writer Simon Racioppa claims that the two seasons have been in the works for longer than fans might assume.
Racioppi said, “We’ve been working on it for a while”. “We’re working very hard on it. Basically, every day Robert is working on it, I’m working on it. We’re talking about it, and we are well in on the process. We’ve been working on it longer than I think people are aware, but it takes a while. It’s a big show.”
Racioppi elaborated on the development of Invincible season 2, “I think you’re going to be very happy with it. I hope so. We want to make it as bad as everyone wants to see it. We’re deep in. I wish it was already done and I wish it was finished, but it’s just not. We’re deep into it.”
However, it was reported in January 2022 that Steven Yeun, the actor who plays the show’s primary protagonist Mark Grayson, has not yet begun recording lines for Invincible Season 2. If that hasn’t changed by now, then season 2 will still have a lot of work to do.
A return to the recording booth is imminent, Simmons said, “I think I’m allowed to say that we’re going back to work very soon in the recording booth”. “Now, the lag between us doing our first recordings and the animation being completed is obviously many months and probably more than a year, I would guess. But, yes, Invincible is getting to work in earnest and season two is imminent, I will say. There’s a nice vague term.”
The announcement that legendary animation producer Marge Dean had joined as the company’s new Head of Animation came around the same time as those statements from Yeun.
With his prior credits including Gen: Lock for HBO, Robot Chicken for Adult Swim, and The Ricky Gervais Show for Channel 4, Dean will “immediately focus” on Invincible seasons 2 and 3.

As a result, it’s feasible that things will go along more quickly now that Dean is in her new role post from Invincible’s social media account suggests that the show’s second season will premiere in early 2023, but don’t hold your breath for it just yet.
According to Kirkman, who spoke at a Skybound Xpo virtual panel on Invincible season 1 in July 2021, season 2 isn’t coming anytime soon. Marvel Studios’ planned Zombies animated movie, Kirkman indicated (in November 2021) that he was “happily very busy working on other stuff” working on other projects when questioned about his role in the project. With any luck, the second season of Invincible will be included with his “other stuff”.
Invincible Season 2: the Cast
Only Yeun’s comeback has been confirmed, although the following actors are expected to return from season 1:
Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson/Invincible
J.K. Simmons as Nolan Grayson/Omni-Man
Sandra Oh as Debbie Grayson
Zazie Beetz as Amber Bennett
Gillian Jacobs as Samantha Eve Wilkins/Atom Eve
Andrew Rannells as William Crockwell
Walton Goggins as Cecil Stedman
Jason Mantzoukas as Rex Sloan/Rex Splode
Ross Marquand as Rudy Conners, Kursk and Bi-Plane
Mark Hamill as Art Rosenbaum
Khary Payton as Markus Grimshaw/Black Samson
Malese Jow as Kate Cha/Dupli-Kate
Grey Griffin as Shrinking Rae and Amanda (Monster Girl’s human form)
Kevin Michael Richardson as Monster Girl/the Mauler Twins
Seth Rogen as Allen the Alien
Mahershala Ali as Titan
It’s possible that other actors may return as well.
Season 1’s Robot was voiced by Zachary Quinto, but it’s not certain if he’ll be back for season 2. According to the first season, Robot was Rudy Conners’ artificial host body. Rudy had genetic abnormalities that made him unable to live outside of his saline tank for the first time.
Rudy’s voice has been taken over by Ross Marquand, who took Rudy’s place when Rudy’s consciousness was transferred to his new body in episode 7.
As a result, we don’t know if Quinto will be back. The comic book character Robot plays an important role, but we have no idea if those events will be featured in Invincible seasons 2 and 3, or even beyond that point.
Chris Diamantopoulos (Doc Seismic), Fred Tatasciore (Kill Cannon), Clancy Brown (Damien Darkblood), Jeffrey Donovan (Machine Head), Ezra Miller, and Michael Dorn (D.A. Sinclair) are all possible returnees.
Kirkman has stated a desire to see more of The Walking Dead’s cast return in future seasons. Many other Walking Dead actors and actresses have already been cast in various parts, but Kirkman wants more of the show’s stars to provide their voices for the show’s next season.
He said: “I can’t think of an actor on The Walking Dead I wouldn’t want to work with again. It’s an amazing group of actors. Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira, Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Jeffrey Dean Morgan…there’s not really anyone I wouldn’t want to bring in.”
Invincible Season 2: the Plot
Although it’s enjoyable, the comic book series might be a little perplexing at times. For Invincible season 2, we already have a general idea of what the next episode will look like. Based on the season 1 ending and some hints from the series’ social media account, this is what we should expect for season 2.
First, let’s talk about the season finale of Invincible. When Omni-Man realized that he couldn’t murder Mark and enslave humanity for the Viltrumite Empire, he wept as he left Earth for an unknown destination.
This plotline should be continued in Season 2. Aside from protecting Earth from the Viltrumites, Mark will also assist the Coalition of Planets in stopping them from expanding across the universe.
Because of Allen the Alien’s warning, Mark is already aware of a fleet’s approach. As Allen’s involvement in the comics grows in the future, we may expect their friendship to deepen in season 2.
We should also look into the disappearance of Omni-Man/Nolan. As payback for abandoning his post on Earth, Nolan sets out to invade another planet in the comics, hoping to find the Viltrum Empire there.
The relationship between Mark and Nolan continues to be thoroughly explored in the comics, so there is a lot more for the TV series to portray. So, rather than delve too deeply into the father-son relationship, let’s just say that we’re hoping to see more of Simmons’ Nolan in the future.
It’s also expected that the show will explore the cosmos in season two. There will be odd places, exotic characters, and a story that spans the entire cosmos that are brought to life on the big screen.
The closing episode of Season 1 also hinted at further storylines for Season 2. Until now, the Sequids plot hasn’t been fully wrapped up. After exchanging places with one of the astronauts, we discover that a Martian has infiltrated Earth.
The Sequins have also taken control of the astronaut who was left behind on Mars, which might be severe news for Earth if this parasitic race decides to make its way to our planet.
It’s possible that Titan and Battle Beast’s storylines will be developed further. While they were away, Machine Head’s criminal organization and their respective teleportation devices were taken over by the duo.
In the comics, their stories continue, and Kirkman has already hinted at a bigger role for Battle Beast in season 2. Despite Omni-destruction Man’s of their planet in episode 2, the Flaxans appear to be returning.
As Kirkman revealed during the Skybound Xpo Invincible virtual discussion (where he declined to disclose when season 2 would debut), “He really shakes things up. If you’re familiar with the comics and you’ve watched the TV show, you’ll get a sense of where we’re going with the second season, especially if you think really hard about how we adapted the story in the first season.”
Kirkman also hinted at “crazy stuff coming” while Mantzoukas said he couldn’t wait for season 2 to “introduce more villains… like Thragg” and more of the comic series’ interplanetary themes.
Invincible Season 2: Number of Seasons
As of this writing, there are 144 Invincible comics, which span 15 years of Kirkman and Walker’s work together. Season 1 of the TV show rearranged the sequence of certain plot events, but only the first 23 issues were addressed in the first eight episodes.
Invincible may end around the season 7 or 8 mark if future seasons follow the same path.
Kirkman was giddy about his own show when he said that last number, but Invincible has the potential to run for at least five seasons. Amazon would be making a mistake if they decided to cancel the show after three seasons. But it will all rely on how well Invincible performs in its last two seasons.
If Amazon’s live-action adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s The Boys is a hit, there’s no reason why Invincible season 2 can not follow suit and become a long-term hit for the company.
