Bill Hagstrom, chief of police in Ashland, told the Ashland Daily Press on Monday that Bewley was unharmed in the collision and that the State Patrol was currently at the scene reconstructing the accident. As of this writing, no charges have been filed.

“We’ll be sitting down with them and going over everything as far as determining how it all actually happened,” Hagstrom told the newspaper. “Then we’ll forward everything to the district attorney for their review because it was a fatal accident.”

Bewley, a 70-year-old Mason native and representative of Wisconsin’s far northwest, is a Democrat. According to the Ashland Police Department, the accident happened when Alyssa Ortman’s car was struck when she pulled out of a beach entrance onto Lake Superior. After colliding with Bewley’s, Ortman’s car spun across Highway 2 and was struck by another car.

Ortman’s daughter, who was only five years old, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Ortman was taken to a local hospital, but sadly she was pronounced dead there, as reported by the police. According to Hagstrom, Bewley did not end up in the hospital.

“This is a heartbreaking event for the community. Our thoughts and prayers are focused on the individuals involved, their families, and their loved ones,” Bewley’s office said in a statement Monday. “Senator Bewley, who was not seriously injured in the accident, wants to thank all the dedicated law enforcement and emergency medical personnel who helped in the aftermath of the accident.”

Senator Bewley, who has served since 2015, will not be running again.
