Letitia Ann “Tish” James (born October 18, 1958) is a lawyer, activist, and politician from the United States. She is a Democrat who was elected as New York’s Attorney General in 2018 to follow appointed Attorney General Barbara Underwood.
She is the first African-American female to hold the job. James received her J.D. from Howard University in Washington, D.C. after graduating from Lehman College in The Bronx.
She started her career as a public defender, then as a member of the New York State Assembly’s staff, and finally as a New York State Assistant Attorney General (Brooklyn Regional Office).
James served on the New York City Council from 2004 to 2013. In the 35th Congressional District, she represented the Brooklyn communities of Clinton Hill, Fort Greene, and sections of Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, and Bedford-Stuyvesant.
James was a member of a number of committees, including the Economic Development and Sanitation Committees. She later served as New York City’s Public Advocate from 2013 to 2018.
She was the first African-American woman elected to serve as Public Advocate in New York City. In the 2022 election, James ran for governor of New York.
She declared her candidacy on October 29, 2021, and then resigned on December 9, 2021, to seek for re-election as attorney general.

James worked as a public defender for the Legal Aid Society and founded the Urban Network, a group of African-American professional groups dedicated to providing scholarships to young people.
She served on the Judiciary Diversity Task Force of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo. She was Albert Vann’s lawyer, Roger L. Green’s Chief of Staff in the New York State Assembly, and Eliot Spitzer’s Chief of Staff at the New York Attorney General’s Office.
In 1999, she was named the first Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Brooklyn regional office. While in that position, James served in a variety of positions, with a special emphasis on consumer complaints about predatory lending and other illegal company practices.
