Richard’s impact on modern popular culture and his fight for Black artists’ rights are examined in the documentary Little Richard: King and Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. He had problems accepting his s*xuality.
What (OTT) Service Can I Watch the Documentary on Little Richard?
While awarding Jody Watley with the Best New Artist Grammy at the 1988 ceremony, Little Richard reportedly made the following declaration:
“I am the architect of rock and roll! I am the originator.”
This claim is corroborated by the information presented in the upcoming American Masters documentary Little Richard: King and Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, which will have its national premiere on PBS stations on Friday, June 2.
Little Richard’s booming piano playing, flamboyant attitude, and genre-defying musical style influenced by gospel, blues, and the queer community solidified his place as a significant figure in rock ‘n’ roll’s early development.
In the same way, Little Richard became famous. He inspired other musicians while facing widespread discrimination and rigid conventions pertaining to how men and women should identify and express themselves.
Musicians such as Elton John, Prince, Harry Styles, and David Bowie cited Little Richard as an influence. The music of Little Richard was greatly admired by both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
By singing some of Little Richard’s songs and adopting his style, the Beatles showed that they appreciated him rather than exploited him. Little Richard often booked the Beatles and the Stones to open for him when they were starting.
Although “Tutti Frutti” was Richard’s first Top 40 hit, it was later covered by white artists like Elvis Presley and Pat Boone, making Richard feel like an outcast.
“When I first heard ‘Tutti Frutti’ my heart nearly burst with excitement, The music filled the room with energy and color and outrageous defiance. I had heard God.”
Little Richard’s decision to abandon his career and return to his gospel roots, the legacy of his number-one hits like “Good Golly, Miss Molly,” “Long Tall Sally,” and “Lucille” lives on in modern rock & roll.
