The long-awaited Madonna biopic has been put on hold indefinitely. Multiple sources have confirmed to Variety that the movie is no longer in development at Universal Pictures, where the legend was set to helm the film herself.
After Madonna announced a career-spanning world tour last week, selling out performances in New York, London, Paris, and elsewhere in a matter of minutes, speculation immediately erupted regarding the film’s destiny. Madonna’s closest confidants have indicated the singer is completely preoccupied with the tour, but she has not abandoned plans to make a biopic.
Madonna biopic starring Julia Garner scrapped
Both Madonna’s and Garner’s (and Universal Pictures’) representatives remained silent on the topic. However, although being announced in 2020, the film didn’t begin production until the end of 2022. Madonna wrote two versions of the script spanning her entire career and personal life.
Diablo Cody, the winner of an Academy Award, collaborated on an earlier draught (their writing sessions were widely disseminated on social media). ‘Secretary’ and ‘The Girl on the Train’ star Erin Cressida Wilson gave it another shot. Last year in June, Variety announced that Garner, a winner of both the Emmy and the Golden Globe, will be playing the pop icon.

As a result of weeks of singing and dancing boot camp, a group of young actors (including Florence Pugh, “Euphoria” star Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, and Bebe Rexha) competed in a bake-off. Donna Langley, chairwoman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, introduced the film to the studio with Amy Pascal, whose eponymous production firm is located on the Uni property.
Executive producing duties were to be shared by Madonna’s longtime manager Guy Oseary and Sara Zambreno. Madonna and Pascal would have reunited for the project, having previously collaborated on the 1992 baseball classic “A League of Their Own.”
With “Filth and Wisdom,” a British-based comedy from 2008, and “W.E.,” a historical romance about King Edward VIII’s departure from the British monarchy to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson, Madonna has directed two full-length features.

Ozark Star Julia Garner Madonna Biopic Has Been Indefinitely Postponed
Julia Garner, who recently starred in Ozark, was set to play Madonna in a biopic, but the project has apparently been scrapped. Universal Pictures reportedly opted to put the film on hold while Madonna prepared for her next tour, as reported by Variety.

Reports indicate that Madonna is still intent on adapting her life narrative into a movie of some kind, so the biopic isn’t completely dead. Madonna and Universal’s reps have remained silent. The first rumors about Garner’s involvement with the project surfaced last spring when it was reported that she was in the running alongside Marvel star Florence Pugh, and Alexa Demie (Euphoria).
Garner is fresh off a breakout year that included an Emmy nomination for Netflix’s Inventing Anna and the end of Ozark (Mayor of Kingstown). In June, it was announced that American actress Jennifer Lawrence will play the Material Girl in the film, and Madonna would oversee the film’s choreography.
Madonna revealed shortly after the biopic’s announcement that she would license her biography and songs so that she would be shown as “an artist, a musician, a dancer” in the film.
