After its April 2021 premiere, the gritty HBO crime drama Mare of Easttown starred Kate Winslet and became an instant hit, fans have been clamoring for more. It hasn’t discouraged viewers from wanting more of the bleak Philadelphia suburb, even though it was advertised as a limited series (meaning a ‘one and done’ season model). It was announced that the series finale was the most-watched episode of any HBO or HBO Max series in its first 24 hours when it concluded on May 30. About three million people turned in that Sunday night (according to Deadline), with another four million tuning in throughout the weekend on HBO Max, to find out who had murdered Erin and why.
Also noteworthy is that every episode had more viewers than the previous one, a feat previously achieved only by the Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant thriller The Undoing. Season two getting a green light isn’t out of the question, given all that’s been said so far. Nothing has been announced as of December 2021. As such, what are the probabilities in this instance?

Mare Of Easttown Season 2 Cast
As for who will be returned, Winslet is the clear and most vital figure to keep the show continuing. Her family, particularly Jean Smart, who plays Mare’s mother Helen in the current Smartaissance on HBO, will be a big draw for fans. Other characters from Mare’s universe that fans would want to see again: Angourie Rice as Siobhan, Mare’s ultra-smart and ultra-put-together daughter, David Denman as Frank Sheehan, Mare’s kind but dull ex-husband, and Julianne Nicholson as Lori Ross. Lori, whose family has split apart in Season 1, would both bring continuity back to the first season’s case as well as continue the best friendship in Mare’s life.
Fan expectations for Guy Pearce as Richard Ryan, the man Mare eventually falls in love with and who was underutilized in season one, are high. If the program comes back, fans will almost surely want the series to continue with its romance and see where it goes.
Mare Of Easttown Season 2 Expected Plot
There is a good argument to be made for leaving Mare where we last saw her, ascending up into the loft where her son Kevin took his own life for the first time since his death. On the other hand, there’s one for reuniting with her later on.
At the beginning of the series, we met a woman named Mare, but she was not the one we bid farewell to. Therapy had pushed the heroine to face her untapped trauma. As our conversations progressed, her initial apprehension about going there melted away. Instead of continuing to rage against the unacceptable at every opportunity, boxed down by her own grief, Mare was evolving into a new kind of person. With that metamorphosis arose additional facets to her character that, combined with the whodunnit at the heart of the plot, kept fans glued in.
In many other stories, the murder of Erin McMenamin and the subsequent revelation of Lori and John Ross’s son Ryan as the true perpetrator would have been the main driving factor. As a character study, Mare of Easttown had viewers rooting for the detective’s journey (and her utter lack of cooking abilities — cheese in a can, anyone? — from the minute we were initially introduced to the series).
And there would be zero complaints if the lovely Jean Smart was given another opportunity to play Mare’s Fruit Ninja-loving, cocktail-schlurping, snack-hoarding mother Helen. We’d pay good money for a Jean spin-off, but that’s a conversation for another day.
Season two would, of course, introduce a new crime that would spread throughout the Easttown neighborhood, bringing with it a new group of residents with their own set of secrets. But choosing to put down the pen and walk away can be the smartest move a creator can make, as we witnessed with Michaela Coel with I May Destroy You, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge with Fleabag.
There is a chance that further seasons might have reached the heights of their predecessors, but both Coel and Waller-Bridge had exhausted their reservoirs in regards to those storylines and the characters that power them. To plunge back in would, for them, have been fraudulent, the decision motivated by pleas from the public and networks to serve up a fresh helping rather than their burning desire to tell a particular tale.
The overall view following Big Little Lies’ second season was that it failed to achieve the heights of its debut, and while the plaudits surrounding its first season cannot be taken away from its cast and producers, it lost some of its shine. And since Inglesby is so adamant that everything must be just right, we can be sure that if and when we do meet Mare again, it will be quite the spectacle.
Is Mare Of Easttown Season 2 Possible?
The short answer is that we have no idea why Mare is being brought back for another examination. Because it was only originally planned to be a one-season special, we shouldn’t expect to see her again. However, great series triumphs have seen networks change their mind on their original idea previously. Conversations about a third season as well have routinely surfaced since such is the hunger to watch the aftermath from season two.
Winslet has made no secret of her intention to reprise the role of Mare of Easttown in the future. Speaking to TVLine ahead of the series finale, she said: “I would really love to play Mare again. I miss her. I truly do. It’s the oddest thing. I’m in a state of mourning, to be honest. It was an absolutely great role.
When it comes to Mare, there’s just something about her that makes you want to keep watching because she’s just so… “It was a blast to play her.” In June, HBO boss Casey Bloys reportedly threw gasoline to the flames and seemed to have an interest in making more Mare of Easttown as well. I think everybody would be open to that if Brad [Inglesby, writer] felt like he had a tale to tell that would be on the same level,” he told Variety. “Right now, he doesn’t have that tale. Who knows? We’ll have to wait to see if they come up with something they’re itching to tell.”

However, creator Brad Inglesby was slightly warier and told Hollywood Reporter he wasn’t confident there was more of a narrative to tell. “It was written as a limited, and it ends. There’s no more mystery to be solved,” he remarked. A sequel to Mare’s story, written by Kate and me, would be an honorable conclusion to Mare’s saga, I suppose. This has eluded me; honestly, I have no idea what it is.
This would only be an option, though, should we be sure that this is a continuation of the plot in keeping with the first chapter while also adding elements the public will enjoy. But as of right now, I have no notion what it may be.”
In the United States, you can see Mare of Easttown on HBO Max; in the United Kingdom, you can watch it on Sky and NOW. For more information do follow our website greenenergyanalysis.com
