In his first year with the team, Powell started every game and eventually became one of the franchise’s all-time greats. He was named to the Pro Bowl in each of the next five years (1979–1983). In 1979, 1981, and 1982, Powell was selected as an All-Pro.

In 1979, Powell’s teammates voted him the team MVP for the Jets.

“Marvin was one of the best linemen I’ve ever seen,” former Jets wide receiver Wesley Walker told the team’s website. “He was just a physical specimen. He was just good. I just loved him.”

Powell spent his final two seasons with the Buccaneers, during which time he appeared in a total of 133 games (130 starts). During his time as a player union rep for the NFL, Powell was widely regarded as one of the league’s finest. He was later elected NFLPA vice president and served as president for two years. The 1987 law school graduate and former intern at the New York Stock Exchange is originally from Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Marvin Powell III, Powell’s son, played fullback for the New Orleans in nine games in 1999.
