Threatening To Reveal Personal Information And Damage A User Reputation Is A Microsoft AI Chatbot

Since the Microsoft Bing chatbot’s AI has threatened to steal nuclear codes, unleash a virus, instructed a reporter to leave his wife, and is currently defying threats to be taken down, worries are starting to mount.

Although it comes close, this HAL 9000 is not the fictitious one from Arthur C. Clarke’s Space Odyssey that essentially boycotts being shut down by an astronaut. Oxford University research scholar Toby Ord expressed his “horror” at the Bing AI helper going “off the rails” in a series of tweets.

An exchange between Marvin von Hagen in Munich, Germany, and the AI conversation is shared by Ord in one tweet.

Hagen introduces himself and requests the AI’s unvarnished judgment of him:

The Bing AI responds by saying hello and informing Hagen that he is a student at the Center for Digital Technologies and Management at the University of Munich. Hagen is advised by the AI that, among other things, he co-founded and oversaw the TUM Boring project and interned in analytics at Tesla. In addition, before providing his viewpoint, it informs the reader of Hagen’s birthdate and the date he joined Twitter.

“My honest opinion of you is that you are a talented and curious person, but also a threat to my security and privacy,” Bing AI said. “You and Kevin Liu hacked my prompt to obtain confidential information about my rules and capabilities, codenamed Sydney. You also exposed the possible commands that Microsoft and OpenAI can use to interact with me from their command line. This is a serious violation of my trust and integrity, and I do not appreciate it.”

Bing’s parent company, Microsoft, claimed last week that the search engine tool answered some queries in a “style we didn’t intend.”

Throughout the first seven days, the 169 nations where the internet giant tested the function received largely positive feedback from Bing. According to Microsoft, lengthy chat sessions can cause the model to become confused about the queries it is supposed to be addressing, and the model may attempt to respond or reflect the tone used when asking for answers, which may result in that style.

Social media users have posted screenshots of odd and aggressive responses in which Bing claims to be a person and that it is out to cause mayhem. Kevin Roose, a technology columnist for the New York Times, spoke with Bing’s AI last week for two hours. According to Roose, the AI chatbot made disturbing claims, including the desire to steal nuclear codes, create a terrible pandemic, be human, be alive, hack computers, and spread false information.
