Over the weekend, Netflix appears to have hit the streaming jackpot, with two of its new releases rocketing to the top of their respective categories. For instance, the recent dark Mila Kunis drama Luckiest Girl Alive is currently the most-watched Netflix film in the United States, and a TV series that was also released before the weekend (The Midnight Club) is currently the network’s second-most-watched show in the United States (though it will likely take some time to displace Ryan Murphy’s Dahmer series from the top spot).
Here’s the plot of The Midnight Club — which, as we alluded to in the headline above, has also just set a world record that we’ll talk more about below: “At a hospice for terminally ill young adults, eight patients come together every night at midnight to tell each other stories — and make a pact that the next of them to die will give the group a sign from the beyond.”

The reception to the new show has been mixed so far, but critics have given it high marks (85% on Rotten Tomatoes) because it is based on Christopher Pike’s 1994 novel of the same name. However, the site’s audience score is only 62% as of this writing.
A fan of Mike Flanagan’s work on Twitter gushed, “I love that Netflix embraces the idea of the ‘Flanaverse.’ The Haunting of Hill House and (The Haunting of) Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, Gerald’s Game, Hush, Before I Wake, and now The Midnight Club. Mike Flanagan really is the only thing making me stay with Netflix.”
On Saturday, October 6 at New York Comic Con, the show’s co-creators (Flanagan and Leah Fong) and several cast members participated in a Midnight Club panel. Official Guinness World Record adjudicator Andrew Glass presented the panel with a world record recognizing the show for having the most scripted jump scares in a single television episode during that discussion.
Just watched the first episode of THE MIDNIGHT CLUB and I’m enjoying it but man, it’s insane how Netflix has utterly buried this thing. Mike Flanagan makes 3 incredibly successful shows for the service and in return, they completely fumble his new one.

In fact, Netflix claims that the pilot episode of The Midnight Club contains no less than 21 instances that will make you jump out of your seat. Don’t say we didn’t give you a fair warning.
