Is New Amsterdam Season 5 Canceled on NBC?

New Amsterdam debuted in 2018 and immediately followed the network’s main drama, This is Us, on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. The show’s engaging premise of a doctor battling hospital bureaucracy, along with the show’s preferred time, helped make it into a critical and rating darling.

It also stood out from other “case-of-the-week” medical dramas on competing networks since it was based on a real-life story.

New Amsterdam was inspired by Eric Manheimer’s book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital.

New Amsterdam’s fourth season was supposed to bring its characters more joy after a difficult year, but since the first episode aired in September, there hasn’t been much happiness to go around.

In an effort to rein in the hospital’s spending, Veronica Fuentes, a newcomer with a track record for upsetting the applecart, has been appointed.

According to NBC head of scripted programming Lisa Katz, “The story of Max Goodwin and his never-ending commitment to patients at New Amsterdam has been inspiring.”

Added Universal Television president Erin Underhill: “When I first read the pilot script for New Amsterdam, I knew we had a winner. We cheered Max’s disruption of the status quo and applauded when he asked his patients the simple yet profound question, ‘How can I help?’ Over the last four seasons, David, Peter, and our incredible cast have tackled important and thought-provoking stories that have touched on the human condition, but also made us laugh and imbued hope. We’re so proud of this series and are indebted to everyone involved in bringing New Amsterdam to life.”

The cast of the show includes Ryan Eggold as Dr. Max Goodwin, the medical director at New Amsterdam Medical Center, Janet Montgomery as Dr. Lauren Bloom, head of the emergency department, Freema Agyeman as Dr. Helen Sharpe, head of the oncology and hematology department, Jocko Sims as Dr. Floyd Reynolds, cardiovascular surgeon and head of cardiac surgery.

Tyler Labine as Dr. Ignatius “Iggy” Frome, psychiatrist and head of the psychiatry department, Anupam Kher as Dr. Vijay Kapoor, former head of the neurology department, and Sandra Mae Frank as Dr. Elizabeth Wilder, a deaf surgeon and the newest chief of oncology.

The future of the New Amsterdam hospital has been questioned numerous times during the current season, but what about the future of the NBC series, is it ending?

New Amsterdam Season 4 Recap

NBC debuted season 4 of New Amsterdam on September 21st, 2021. After a promising start, things have gone downhill fast in New Amsterdam.

In the first few episodes, Dr. Helen Sharpe stated that she intended to return to the United Kingdom, and Max decided that he wanted to accompany her.

Their strategy has been thrown into jeopardy by the new medical director at New Amsterdam Hospital, Veronica Fuentes, who has been tasked with turning things around at the faltering facility by whatever means necessary.

This was made worse by an episode 8 cyber assault that resulted in several supporting cast members losing their employment due to Veronica’s cold-blooded tactics regarding the hospital’s budget.

Helen and Max completed their relocation to the UK during New Amsterdam’s Christmas break. However, with Max suffering in an alien healthcare system, he swiftly returned to New Amsterdam to stop Veronica Fuentes from destroying all of his good work.

In light of falling viewership, the show’s producers have decided to call it quits rather than offering a further extension.

A final 13 episodes of the medical drama New Amsterdam will air when it returns for its fifth season in 2022/23 on TV.
