Patrick Swayze, the actor, passed away from pancreatic cancer.

Publicist Annett Wolf said in a statement obtained by the Associated Press that Swayze, 57, passed away “peacefully” with his family by his side.

Although his roles in Dirty Dancing and Ghost won him legions of fans, Swayze will also be remembered for his efforts to bring attention to pancreatic cancer, which is uncommon but difficult to detect.

In March of 2008, Swayze was given a diagnosis with pancreatic cancer. His wife, the dancer/actor Lisa Niemi, will carry on his legacy.

Before his death from pancreatic cancer, Patrick Swayze inspired the director of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California, Gagandeep Singh, MD.

“He continued to work despite being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer,” Singh said. “We don’t want people to close the door when they are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.”

Despite being diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in March 2008, Swayze finished filming all 13 episodes of his TV series The Beast without resorting to pain medication.

In an emotional January interview with Barbara Walters, he spoke openly about his ordeal. “You can bet that I’m going through hell,” Swayze said. “And I’ve only seen the beginning of it.”

Swayze admitted himself to the hospital two days after that interview aired to treat his pneumonia.

Swayze attended San Jacinto College after finishing high school at Houston’s Waltrip High. He was born in Houston on August 18, 1952. Jesse Wayne Swayze, his father, passed away in 1982.

Patsy, Patrick’s mom, ran a dance studio in Houston, where her son probably learned some of the steps he later used to impress Jennifer Grey in the movie Dirty Dancing. Swayze made his professional dancing debut in Disney on Parade, performing the role of Prince Charming. Danny Zuko in the first Broadway production of Grease, in which he also starred.

Among the many highlights of his film career are his Golden Globe nominations for his roles as Johnny Castle, the dance instructor, in Dirty Dancing and as Sam Wheat, the ghost, in Ghost.

Swayze’s doctors gave him the go-ahead to return to filming episodes of The Beast several months after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
