Randy Quaid’s Legal Troubles

Beginning in the mid-1990s, Randy Quaid’s life took a dramatic turn. Not long after tying the knot with his second wife, Evi, Quaid started ranting about a criminal organization he believed was embezzling his money.

He claimed that an unknown organization had established a trust in his name and was transferring revenues that should have been his.

Randy Quaid claimed in 2005 that the producers of Brokeback Mountain had paid him significantly less than the going rate after deceiving him, and he sued them for $10 million.

As to Quaid’s account, Randy was informed by the producers that Brokeback Mountain was an independent, tiny film that had little chance of making money. With $178 million in the box office, Quaid supposedly felt a bit used in the picture.

Afterward, a string of peculiar occurrences during the Broadway musical Lone Star Love rehearsals led to Randy Quaid’s expulsion from the Actors’ Equity Union and a $81,000 fine. Evi allegedly sent threatening, sexually explicit, and unpleasant letters to the show’s producers and actors, leading to accusations of harassment.

Additional accusations against Quaid included physical and verbal abuse directed towards fellow actors and members of the production crew. There are rumors, though, that the producers tried to remove Quaid’s contractually guaranteed role in the creative process by taking legal action against him.

Evi and Randy’s 2009 arrest for failing to pay a $10,000 Santa Barbara hotel bill marked the beginning of a very catastrophic turn of events. They fled the hotel without making a payment, which led to their arrest and fraud charges. Due to insufficient evidence, Randy’s case was dismissed, despite Evi’s conviction.

During this time, Randy and Evi were subject to numerous arrest warrants due to their repeated failure to appear in court or post bond. As word got out, Randy Quaid’s acting career took a nosedive.

A guesthouse on the property they had previously owned was where they were eventually discovered squatting. The property was never sold, according to Randy Quaid’s defense, and he claimed that his signature was forged during the transaction. After the pair’s $30,000 worth of damage to the property was discovered, the new owner had them jailed.

Randy and Evi did it again—this time they skipped jail and court—but this time they sought asylum in Canada. At this period, they began publicly expressing their concerns on a criminal organization known as the “Star Wackers.” Randy and Evi said that this gang was behind the deaths of Heath Ledger and other famous people.

Despite Evi’s 2011 citizenship grant from Canada based on her familial ancestry, Randy’s permanent resident status application was rejected. They would soon be compelled to return to the United States and face their former criminal charges, even if they sued the State Department for withholding their passports. The deportation of the couple was ultimately decided upon by Canada.

It would appear that the Quaids were hell-bent on getting a jump on the Canadian government when they crossed into Vermont in 2015. They were both taken into custody without delay and sent to different prisons with bail amounts of half a million dollars apiece.

It was expected that they would be returned to California to face their accusations, but a judge in Vermont discovered inconsistencies in their case and overturned the extradition decision.

Later in a press statement, Randy Quaid’s attorney said that an arrest warrant had been first issued by a judge in California prior to the alleged offense.

After receiving unconditional permission to remain, Randy and Evi chose to settle down in Vermont. In 2017, the Quaids flew to California without facing any consequences, despite the widespread belief that they would be arrested if they left Vermont.
