South Florida police arrested popular rapper Kodak Black on charges of oxycodone trafficking and possessing a controlled substance.

Trump pardoned Bill Kapri, aka the rapper, on his last day in office after he had been convicted of a weapons charge. Bradford Cohen, his attorney, told Rolling Stone that his client was arrested on Friday in Fort Lauderdale and released on Saturday after posting a $75,000 bond.

According to a statement released by the Florida Highway Patrol, Black was stopped because his vehicle’s window tint appeared to be darker than the allowed level.

While searching the vehicle, police claim to have discovered 31 white tablets and nearly US$75,000 in cash (£63,200, A$110,200) in a small clear bag. Reportedly, oxycodone was found to be the active ingredient in the tablets.

The agency claims that Black’s registration and license both expired upon further investigation.

“Never judge a case based on an arrest. Some facts and circumstances give rise to a defense, especially in this case,” Cohen told Rolling Stone on Saturday. “We will move forward with resolving the matter quickly.”

In addition to his arrest in north Florida, Black was also taken into custody for trespassing in south Florida earlier this year. Later, the prosecution decided not to pursue the matter further.

The rapper’s three-year federal prison sentence for document forgery related to the purchase of firearms was commuted by President Trump in January 2020. Close to half of Black’s sentence had already been completed.

He was convicted of assaulting a minor in a South Carolina hotel room in 2021 and given a probationary sentence. When Black was initially charged with rape, he took a deal that reduced the charges to first-degree assault.

Black’s latest single, “Super Gremlin,” peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 this year, and a remix by DJ David Guetta was released earlier this year. Black has sold over 30 million singles to date.
