Selena Quintanilla Death: Who Killed Selena Quintanilla Perez And Why?

Everyone here adores Selena; we can’t stop singing along to old favorites like “Como La Flor” and “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.” Even if you’ve seen the Netflix series or the movie starring Jennifer Lopez as Selena, you may still have concerns regarding the Tejano superstar’s tragic death.

Based on the life of the iconic singer who captured the hearts of fans across the world before her untimely death in 1995, Selena: The Series can be viewed on Netflix. Even if the perpetrator may be obvious to those of us old enough to have seen the tragedy unfold, the identity of the criminal may remain a surprise to many younger viewers and followers.

The Mexican-American singer Selena, who was raised in Texas, became a cultural icon for numerous reasons. Selena Quintanilla was not only the first significant Latin celebrity to break into the mainstream music industry, but also the first to have songs that topped the charts and were nominated for Grammys. The singer became a role model for women everywhere because she rejected conventional beauty standards in favor of emphasizing her own unique physical attributes. Many of Selena’s clothes from the 1990s are among the most iconic examples of that decade’s fashion, further cementing her status as a trendsetter.

As time has passed, her legacy has been celebrated in numerous ways. Jennifer Lopez‘s portrayal of Quintanilla-Perez in one of her earliest acting appearances, the now-iconic biopic Selena (1997), has spawned a plethora of tributes, from paintings to cosmetics lines, but perhaps the most renowned and popular is the film itself.

Who Killed Selena Quintanilla Perez?

Sadly, Selena Quintanilla Perez was murdered by a woman she knew well. It was Yolanda Saldvar, the president of Selena’s fan club, who became close to the singer and her family.

Those who have watched Selena: The Series in its entirety know that Selena and Yolanda met in 1991 when Yolanda was a newly-minted nurse in San Antonio, Texas, and a huge fan of the singer. Yolanda was 11 years older than her idol at the time, but her devotion to Selena was so strong that she approached the singer’s father and manager to get permission to start a fan club, which she later became president of.

Yolanda was so committed to promoting the singer that she was usually at her side whenever she came back to her hometown in Texas, and the club swiftly grew to over 1,500 members. As we’ve seen on the show, though, Yolanda’s unhealthy obsession with Selena caused her friends and family, as well as Selena’s, to worry about the depths to which she “loved” the singer.

Nonetheless, the two remained close friends for many years until Yolanda’s obsession caused Selena’s untimely demise. Yolanda called Selena from a Days Inn in Corpus Christi, Texas, on March 30, 1995, after checking into the hotel. The following day, the ladies reconnected, but an argument ensued over the singer’s tax paperwork. Yolanda took out A.38 pistol and fired it as Selena was leaving the hotel room, striking her in the back and killing her. Only 90 minutes after the gunshot, Selena was pronounced dead at Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital. Her death sent shockwaves throughout the country.
