Around 8:25 p.m., Johnson was pushing a baby stroller when a man in a black hooded sweatshirt came up from behind and fired a single shot at close range before running away. Police said the baby was fine.

Police sources say that before the shooting, Johnson texted a family member that she was going to meet her baby’s father “to work things out.”

Sources said that after the shooting, police wanted to talk to the baby’s father but hadn’t named him as a suspect yet.

“We are going to find this person that’s guilty of this horrific crime. We are going to find him and bring him to justice,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams had told reporters Thursday.

Sources say that Johnson was living at a shelter for women in East Harlem, which is where detectives think she was.

On Thursday, Johnson’s friends and family held a vigil at the scene of the shooting, which was near a playground.

ABC New York station WABC said that Johnson also had a 1-year-old son and was studying to become a pediatric nurse.
