Foo Fighters Drummer Taylor Hawkins Dies at 50
It’s still unclear exactly how Hawkins died, but here’s what we do know so far.
For the Past 25 Years, He Has Been a Member of Foo Fighters
As a drummer for Alanis Morisette before joining Foo Fighters in 1997, Hawkins was in time to join the band’s tour following the release of “The Colour and the Shape,” according to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame records.
“It took me a long time to find my position at first, it really did,” Hawkins said to Anderson Cooper of CNN in a 2014 interview for “60 Minutes,” referring to Grohl’s experience as the drummer for the famed grunge band Nirvana which tragically ended in April 1994 with the death of Kurt Cobain.

Grohl said, “When you have a drummer like Taylor Hawkins in your band, I don’t necessarily miss being the drummer — because I have the greatest drummer in the world. ” He called Hawkins, “a much more technically minded drummer than I am.”
It wasn’t just Foo Fighters that Hawkins had a hand in. As Taylor Hawkins & the Coattail Riders, he has recorded and released solo songs as well as music with the band. The band has three albums under its belt, the most recent of which being “Get the Money.”
He Died in South America While on Tour
On Friday, shortly before Foo Fighters was scheduled to perform in Colombia at the Festival Estéreo Picnic, news of Hawkins’ death surfaced.
“The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins. His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever,” the band said on Twitter.
“Our hearts go out to his wife, children, and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time.”
According to a statement from Bogotá’s health secretary, emergency responders received a call Friday evening about a patient suffering from chest pains at a hotel north of the city. The incident was responded to with an ambulance.

The Preliminary Findings of Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office
A preliminary “forensic medical study” released Saturday by Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office stated that a urine toxicology test detected 10 chemicals, including THC, tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines, and opioids. However, the cause of death was not divulged.
“The National Institute of Forensic Medicine continues the medical studies to achieve total clarification of the events that led to the death of Taylor Hawkins.”
“The attorney general’s office will continue to investigate his cause of death in a “timely manner.”

During a tribute to Foo Fighters, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin reminisced about playing with the band at Wembley Stadium in 2008.
“It was so good to play with him. I really admired him and he was a brilliant musician: his technique, his energy, and spirited enthusiasm.”
Fans like Franco Tolone, who posted a video of Hawkins singing Queen’s “Somebody to Love” at his final performance at Lollapalooza Argentina on March 20, have also paid respect to Hawkins and his music.
“It was “a shock,” Tolone writes. “Who would have believed that we were watching the last performance of Taylor Hawkins in his life… “Goodbye, beast of music.”
After she set up her drums outside the band’s hotel in Paraguay, 9-year-old Emma Sofia met Hawkins just a few days before his death.
“We will remember him for his personality and the amazing gesture he made to Emma,” his family stated on her Instagram.
“We had a reason to believe in Taylor. It’s hard to overstate how much of a role model he is.”
