TEXAS, UVALDE: On Tuesday, a teenager with a gun stormed into an elementary school in Texas and killed at least 19 children and two adults.

This was the latest mass shooting in the United States and the worst school shooting in the country in almost a decade. The 18-year-old suspect, who was apparently killed by police, shot his own grandmother before fleeing the scene.

He then crashed his getaway car and went on a bloody rampage at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, about 80 miles (130 km) west of San Antonio.

The reason wasn’t clear at first.
Sergeant Erick Estrada of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said on CNN that police saw the gunman come out of his crashed car with a rifle while wearing body armour. They “engaged” the suspect, but he still managed to charge into the school and start shooting.

A few hours later, from the White House, a visibly shaken US President Joe Biden urged Americans to stand up to the politically powerful US gun lobby, which he said was stopping tougher “common-sense” gun safety laws from being passed.

Biden said that flags should be flown at half-staff every day until Saturday evening.

Governor Greg Abbott said that the suspect, whose name was given as Salvador Ramos, was likely killed by police officers and that two officers were shot, but their injuries were not serious, according to the governor.
The police said the suspect did not work with anyone.

In an official statement, the office of the state attorney general said that 18 children, two adults, and the gunman were killed. This was a change from earlier reports, which were not clear. Later, a person from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) told CNN that, besides the shooter, 19 school children and two adults were killed.

Pete Arredondo, chief of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Department, also spoke to reporters. He said that the school’s students are in the second, third, and fourth grades. Students in those grades were probably between 7 and 10 years old.

Ten days after 10 people were killed in a mostly Black neighbourhood in Buffalo, New York, the violence broke out. Authorities have brought charges against an 18-year-old man who they say drove hundreds of miles to Buffalo and opened fire at a grocery store with an assault-style rifle.

Law enforcement officials say that a man with a gun and body armour opened fire in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, killing at least 10 people before being caught Saturday afternoon. Details about how many more people were shot at the Tops Friendly Market and what happened to them

Before going to the school, the suspect shot and killed his grandmother, a Texas Department of Public Safety officer named Chris Olivarez said on Fox News. Abbott had mentioned this earlier in the day.

The governor said, “I don’t know any more about the link between those two shootings.”
University Hospital in San Antonio said on Twitter that a 66-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl were brought there after the shooting in Uvalde. Both were in critical condition.

Uvalde Memorial Hospital said that 15 students from Robb Elementary were treated in its emergency room. Two of them were sent to San Antonio to get more care, and a third transfer was still being planned. It wasn’t clear right away if all of those students had made it out alive.

A 45-year-old man who was hit by a bullet but didn’t get hit was also taken to Uvalde Memorial Hospital, the hospital said.
Hours after the shooting, the school was blocked off with yellow tape by the police. There were police cruisers and emergency vehicles parked all around the school grounds. People in uniform stood in small groups, and some of them were wearing camouflage and carrying semi-automatic weapons.

The Epidemic of Gun Violence

The shooting spree was the latest in a long line of mass school shootings that have sparked a heated debate between people who want stricter gun laws and people who don’t want any laws that could hurt Americans’ constitutional right to bear arms.

Since a gunman killed 26 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in December 2012, the shooting in Texas was one of the deadliest at a US school. In 2018, 17 students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, were killed by a former student.

A research letter from the University of Michigan that was published last month in the New England Journal of Medicine says that by 2020, firearms will have killed more children and teens in the US than car accidents.

Robb Elementary School’s Facebook page talked about the terrible events of the day.
This week, its posts showed the usual student activities, like a second-grade trip to the zoo and a reminder to save the date for a gifted and talented showcase. But at 11:43 a.m. on Tuesday, a note said: “Please know that Robb Elementary is on lockdown right now because there have been gunshots in the area. The building is safe for the students and staff to be in.”

The second post was clearer: “There is a shooter at Robb Elementary School right now. Police are on the scene.” Parents were told to stay away by the people in charge. And finally, a note was put up telling parents to meet their kids at the civic centre of the small city.
