“We would like to applaud the artistry and commitment of our showrunner Cathy Schulman, director Susanne Bier, their fellow executive producers, our amazing cast, led by executive producer Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Gillian Anderson, and our studio partner Lionsgate for their dedicated work in telling the unique stories of three remarkable leaders.”

Following the political and personal lives of Eleanor Roosevelt (Anderson), Betty Ford (Pfeiffer), and Michelle Obama (Davis), the first season of the anthology series cut between three different eras in the White House.

The critical reception to “The First Lady” was lukewarm. The chief television critic at Variety, Caroline Framke, was not a fan of the series’ structural conceit, saying that “squeezing their stories together doesn’t just make for confusing television, but does them all a disservice in the process.” Only three craft nominations were given for the high-profile production across all categories at the Emmys.

The Oscar-winning Schulman served as executive producer and showrunner for the 10-episode Showtime series produced by Lionsgate Television and written by Aaron Cooley. Bier, who has won both an Oscar and an Emmy, served as executive producer and director for the entire first season. Executive producers included Cooley and Davis, Julius Tennon, Andrew Wang, Pavlina Hatoupis, Alyson Feltes, Jeff Gaspin, and Brad Kaplan.
