There is a Riverdale-meets-Stranger Things flavor to this 2020 version of The Hardy Boys, a century-old classic. In reality, it’s set in the 1980s, just like Stranger Things.

Old Hardy Boys fans may be astonished by more than just this one shift to the storyline of the Hardy boys.

When Mrs. Hardy is killed off in a strange vehicle accident in the pilot episode, a narrative twist that never occurs in the books, an old friend from the books is tragically brought to an end.

As a result of the tragedy, the Hardy brothers (Rohan Campbell and Alexander Elliot) and their detective father Fenton (James Tupper) are forced to leave their home city and relocate to the little hamlet of Bridgeport, where they find a deadly secret that could change everything.

In an interview, Campbell, Elliot, and Tupper explained why rewriting the Hardy Boys’ genesis storyline was vital to keep the show relevant.

The Death of The Hardy Boys Was a Tragic but Essential Twist

Elliot said, “It’s a new generation of Hardy Boys, and it’s not the same exact story as the books.”

Hulu’s Hardy Boys series, on the other hand, is more focused on solving the secret of the mother’s death. When it came to bringing the Hardy Boys series up to date, the show’s creators took a new approach to long-form storytelling.

According to Campbell, “We wanted people to be engaged for the long haul.”

When the Hardy boys’ bad luck was used as a plot element, it made it necessary for children to become amateur detectives.

Campbell stated, “We needed to make a choice,” noted Campbell, “and while [the death of the mother] is dark, we wanted to have something that makes it feel like Frank and Joe had no other choice than to become the boys that we know and love from the books.”

Despite the unexpected shift, the cast is sure that the newly reimagined plot will appeal to both existing and new fans.

Elliot stated, “The series still caters to old fans, but it’ll also hopefully create new fans. After they watch it, they’re going to go back and read the books, and they’re going to go back and watch the 1970s TV show. Our modern spin on things, that darkness and grittiness, adds more depth to The Hardy Boys. It makes it more than just a mystery.”

If you haven’t watched the first season of The Hardy Boys yet, go and watch it on Hulu as all the 13 episodes of season 1 are available for streaming.
