Some iPhone customers have reported delayed charging times, even though this new capability has been available for a few months. But don’t worry; you can disable it if you want to.
Some iOS users were ecstatic when Apple unveiled a new update for the operating system last fall, thanks to improvements like the option to go back and change texted texts and choose a personalized lock screen.
Apple’s new Clean Energy Charging feature, which minimizes your phone’s impact on the environment “by optimising charging timings for when the grid is using cleaner energy sources,” seems to have slipped under the radar of some.
Clean Energy Charging has been blamed for the prolonged charging times recently reported by Reddit and TikTok users. Tim Latimer, CEO of Fervo Energy, tweeted on Sunday that he learned about the function when he tried to charge his phone for two hours but found that it wouldn’t hold a charge any longer.

After the iOS 16.1 update in October or when you buy a new iPhone, Clean Energy Charging will automatically activate and provide your iPhone “a forecast of the carbon emissions in your local electricity grid and utilizes it to charge your iPhone during times of cleaner energy generation,.”
According to Apple,
This implies your phone’s charging speed may be slower during peak power demand or if you live in a high-carbon-emitting location. Apple states that Optimized Battery Charging helps Clean Energy Charging “understand your charging practices.”
If you noticed your iPhone is charging a little slower recently it may be due to a new setting Apple added in iOS 16.1 — Clean Energy Charging

Clean Energy Charging only works “where you spend the most time and regularly charge your how to keep your iPhone screen on for a longer time,” That won’t work without you. Apple guarantees a lock screen alert when your phone is fully charged if Clean Energy Charging inhibits charging (you may see a similar notification if you already use Optimized Battery Charging).
Hold that alert until ‘Charge Now’ appears to charge your phone faster. Disable it completely. Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging checks your iPhone’s battery. Tapping the green Clean Energy Charging switch disables it.
If not already, turn Clean Energy Charging on. Before using Clean Energy Charging, Apple recommends promoting location, system, and essential places.
Apple’s website and iPhone’s Battery Health & Charging menu have more information. Several factors may impede iPhone charging. While charging, you may have an older model, a faulty cable, or an overheated phone.
