Trump Tried to Contact Jan 6 Witness
Cheney said the witness hasn’t shown up to the hearings yet, so he didn’t take the call. Instead, he told their lawyer, who told the committee led by Democrats. Cheney said that the committee sent the information to the Justice Department.
“We will take any effort to influence witness testimony very seriously,” she said.
Taylor Budowich, a spokesman for Trump, criticized the committee and the media in response to Cheney’s accusation of witness tampering, but he didn’t get into the details.
Cheney also brought up the idea of possible witness tampering at an earlier hearing. At the hearing on June 28, she said that the panel often asks witnesses with ties to the Trump administration or campaign if they’ve been contacted by former coworkers or other people trying to change or affect their testimony.
She gave examples, like how one witness said people who were interested in their testimony called them on the phone:
” ‘They said to me that as long as I continue to be a team player, they know I’m on the right team. I’m doing the right thing. I’m protecting who I need to protect, you know, I’ll continue to stay in good graces in Trump World,’ “ Cheney said, quoting the witness. ” ‘And they have reminded me a couple of times that Trump does read transcripts.’ “
Cheney said at the time that the committee would talk about the problem and decide what to do next.
