A senior U.S. official verified to Fox News on Sunday that the balloons believed to be carrying the payloads of the mystery “objects” the U.S. shot down over Canada and Alaska were indeed balloons.
Over the course of the weekend, details on the object flying across Canadian airspace were scant. Still, a U.S. official has now described it as a “small metallic balloon with a tethered cargo,” the official told Fox News.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he was briefed on the situation on Sunday, adding that the object spotted in Alaskan airspace on Friday was likewise thought to be a balloon.
Schumer told ABC’s “This Week” that the items were “far smaller” than the Chinese espionage craft that had been shot down over a week ago.
The objects were shot down on orders from President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Nearly Canadian territory, U.S. and NATO forces had been monitoring the thing for over a day before shooting it down on Saturday.
The United States and Canada claim they have no idea where the craft came from and are currently working to retrieve any remaining pieces of the vehicle.

Schumer responded, “They believe they were, yes, but considerably smaller than the first one.” when asked if the two most recent objects were balloons.
According to official estimates, the first balloon was around the size of three school buses. Shot down on February 4th, it had already crossed the country from coast to coast before it was destroyed.
The Biden administration has admitted to using it for spying purposes. The Chinese government says their goal was purely meteorological.
