As part of his plan to help working families hit hard by rising gas prices, California Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered that about 23 million residents receive an “inflation relief” check in the coming days.
Earlier this year, the governor announced that the state would be cutting taxes on diesel fuel and providing additional aid to help people with rent and utility bills as part of a $17 billion relief package.
At least 20 other states have developed stimulus checks or rebates to help their residents deal with inflation, so California isn’t alone in this. Gas prices have dropped since hitting a record high in June, but California drivers still pay the most per gallon of gas on average, according to AAA. Californians pay $6.33 per gallon for gas, nearly double the national average of $3.92.
According to correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti, “we’re told that about 90% of residents in the state are currently eligible for these rebates.”
Here’s when Californians can expect their checks and how much they’ll be getting.
Vigliotti said that on Friday, people started getting their money, either through a mailed debit card or a direct deposit into their bank account. However, the funds may not be received for a few days. According to the California Franchise Tax Board, 90% of those who opt for direct deposit will still receive their refunds by the month’s end. On Friday, some people claimed to have received their checks via direct deposit, while others said they were still waiting.
Is a Direct Deposit an Option?
To those who filed their 2020 taxes online and provided their bank account information, refunds will be deposited directly into those accounts.

Who Will Get a Debit Card in the Mail?
Those who filed taxes but didn’t provide their banking information will get a debit card instead. Others who will receive a debit card are:
- People who filed paper tax returns.
- Those who owed taxes from their 2020 returns.
- Taxpayers who received a direct deposit for their 2020 refunds but who have since changed their bank accounts or switched banks.
- People who received an advance payment from their tax service provider, or who paid their tax preparer fees using their tax refund.
