On The Upper East Side, A Woman Is Shot While Pushing Her Baby In A Stroller
Police reported that the 3-month-old infant was not injured but was still taken to the hospital for observation. Representing the area on the City Council is Julie Menin, who confirmed the victim was the child’s mother on Twitter. The family has not yet been notified, so her identity has been withheld.
“More guns in our city means more lives lost,” Mayor Eric Adams said during a news conference at the site of the shooting. “It means more babies crying, as those who love them lie dead.”
The fear of violent crime is on the rise in many American cities, including New York, though shootings in the city are down by about 12 percent and murders by about 13 percent so far this year compared to the same period last year, according to police statistics. But homicide rates continue to be the second-highest they’ve been since 2012.
