Zendaya Early life
Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman was born to teachers Claire Stoermer and Kazembe Ajamu Coleman on September 1, 1996, in Oakland, California. Her mother’s family hails from Germany and Scotland, while her father is of African-American descent with Arkansas origins.
Zendaya has five elder brothers and sisters; her name comes from the Shona name Tendai, which means “to offer gratitude.” She went to the same elementary school where her mother had taught for twenty years. She and two of her classmates put on a performance for Black History Month when they were just six years old.
While her mother was the summer house manager at the California Shakespeare Theater in Orinda, California, she was able to hone her skills as an actress. Zendaya got her start in the industry as a model for department stores including Macy’s, Mervyn’s, and Old Navy. She appeared in a commercial for iCarly playthings. She also did background dancing for Selena Gomez, a Disney star, in a Sears ad.
