Zombieland: Double Tap, after the debut of Zombieland, took a decade to hit the theatres. Should we expect a similar delay for Zombieland 3? Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin reprise their roles as survivors of a post-apocalyptic America in the sequel to the original film directed by Ruben Fleischer.
Even though the original Zombieland only made about $100 million worldwide on a production budget of $23 million, both critics and zombie enthusiasts were pleased with its performance.
Zombieland: Double Tap, released ten years after the first Zombieland film and following a failed TV pilot, had a similar opening weekend revenue of $26 million. So, even if Sony isn’t planning a third Zombieland movie right now, the stats are excellent enough to justify it.

“Wasn’t the right kind of follow-up,” Fleischer said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly following the premiere of the first Zombieland film. Reese and Wernick put the sequel on the back burner for years while they concentrated on Deadpool.
The wait for Zombieland 3 has already been over a decade. Will it be even longer this time, or may things move along more quickly this time around? Here’s what we’ve learned.
The Director of Zombieland Has an Idea for the Story of Zombieland 3
According to Fleischer, the previous two Zombieland films were structurally similar, and it would be fun to explore various corners of the world in a third film. Instead of shooting Zombieland 3 in Atlanta, he jokingly suggested that the film should take place somewhere with a slightly more pleasant climate:
“Let’s imagine the movie beginning with them all getting off a boat and landing someplace and seeing what that’s like. You know, just not shooting me in Atlanta again. Hawaii sounds nice this time of year… nights in February in Atlanta are really cold. I wouldn’t be made to see what’s going on in Turks and Caicos. What their zombie virus was.”
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the screenwriters behind the film, are also big fans of this concept. Wernick told TheWrap that it was Woody Harrelson who came up with the idea of making the next film on an island during the frigid Atlanta production.
Fiji water was jokingly suggested as a possible treatment for the zombie virus by the film’s writers, so they could travel to Fiji and incorporate product placement into the film.
The Ending of Zombieland: Double Tap Leaves Room For A Sequel
Zombieland’s residents have become well-versed in fending off zombie attacks over the course of their ten-year stay, and they emerge victorious from a final zombie battle alongside Rosario Dawson’s Nevada.
Zombies abound in Zombieland: Double Tap, but the film finishes with everyone driving off into the sunset together in Elvis Presley’s car. Double Tap featured a new breed of super-zombies that have grown to be stronger and smarter than the rest, allowing the zombies to continue to evolve in intriguing ways over time.

Zombieland 3 Expected Release Date
A third Zombieland film is unlikely to emerge in theatres until the year 2023 even if Sony expedites production, and the studio is more than happy to wait until its cast and the creative team start clamoring for a sequel again, considering Zombieland’s mediocre box office performance.
The actors have joked in interviews about making Zombieland 3 in another decade, and given their diverse commitments to other projects it may actually take that long for everyone to get on the same page again. We’ll keep you informed if anything new about Zombieland 3 or a possible release date emerges.
Zombieland 3 Expected Cast
For Zombieland: Double Tap, all of the characters from the original film returned. For a third Zombieland film, the essential four characters of Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita, and Little Rock must reprise their roles.
A third film could feature Rosario’s return as well since Nevada joined the crew at the end of Zombieland: Double Tap. As for the return of Avan and Zoey as Berkeley and Madison, I’m not sure. Everything is within the realm of possibility.
An exclusive interview with Avan regarding his role in Zombieland: Double Tap has been released by HollywoodLife. Avan was delighted to return with producer Gavin Polone, with whom he worked on Avan’s last ABC Family comedy, Twisted.
Avan talked about how he tries to include humor in his role as Berkeley. “It was really cool to work with them and riff off them,” Avan said. “I love comedy. Comedy is great. It’s very hard, though. It’s either funny or not funny, but I do like the environment of riffing with people and trying to create an environment for humor to come out of.”
In Zombieland: Double Tap, Tallahassee and Columbus meet their doppelgangers.
Luke Wilson and Thomas Middleditch portray them. While participating in an Entertainment Weekly roundtable discussion about the film, Emma expressed a want to know who her “doppelganger” would be. For Woody, the obvious choice would be his Hunger Games co-star, Jennifer Lawrence.
