The de@th of Raymond Sawada, a former NHL player, from a heart attack at the age of 38 was announced by his family on Monday, April 10, through a GoFundMe page. According to several reports, the Canadian winger, who spent the 2008–09 season with the Dallas Stars, was injured while playing for the Richmond Cowboys in a pick-up hockey game.
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the sudden passing of Ray Sawada,” Brianne Sameshima, the fundraiser organizer, wrote. Ray, who was 38 years old when he died on April 10, 2023, passed away abruptly while partaking in his favorite activity.
According to Junior B team president Doug Patterson’s interview with Global News, Sawada was out of town for his eldest daughter’s birthday. After being selected at number 52 in the second round of the 2004 NHL draft, Sawada played in 11 games and scored once before taking his talents to the American Hockey League.
The Stars released a statement expressing their “heavy hearts” after the passing of Raymond Sawada. The countless people he helped save, and the hockey fans he inspired will be in our prayers. He was a member of the Cornell Big Red from 2004 to 2008, a span of four years.
“We are devastated to learn of the passing of former Big Red captain Raymond Sawada ‘08,” Cornell’s hockey team wrote on Twitter. “Our deepest condolences go out to Ray’s wife Nicole and their two children, his teammates, coaches, and all of the many people who Ray positively impacted in his life.”
Upon leaving the professional hockey league in 2016, Sawada enlisted with the Burnaby Fire Department. Online condolences and tributes have poured in from hockey players and fans all around the globe.
“Heart breaking news,” Troy Stecher, fellow Canadian and defenseman for the Calgary Flames, wrote on Twitter. “Ray was an idol for a lot of Richmond Minor Players growing up.
“Not only was Ray a successful hockey player, he was a community hero and local firefighter. Thoughts and prayers to his family.”
