He was the offspring of an Afro-Jamaican mother and a Sephardic Jewish father, while his mother was the daughter of a Scottish Jamaican mother and an Afro-Jamaican father. Young Harry has reared a devout Catholic and was educated at the exclusive St. Charles Borromeo Institute.
Belafonte attended Wolmer’s Schools in Jamaica between 1932 and 1940 while living with one of his grandmothers. After moving back to the Big Apple, he enrolled at George Washington High School before enlisting in the Navy and spending the duration of World War II in the Pacific.
Belafonte, Marlon Brando, Tony Curtis, Walter Matthau, Bea Arthur, Sidney Poitier, and others from the American Negro Theater attended the Dramatic Workshop at The New School under the tutelage of renowned German director Erwin Piscator during the tail end of the 1940s.
