Belafonte, Marlon Brando, Tony Curtis, Walter Matthau, Bea Arthur, Sidney Poitier, and others from the American Negro Theater attended the Dramatic Workshop at The New School under the tutelage of renowned German director Erwin Piscator during the tail end of the 1940s.
