Anthony Perkins Career
Perkins co-starred in the 1953 picture “The Actress” with Jean Simmons and Spencer Tracy. In 1954, he was cast in the Broadway production of “Tea and Sympathy.” In 1956, he appeared in the film “Friendly Persuasion.” The film garnered him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor of the Year and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
He later signed a seven-year semi-exclusive deal with Paramount Pictures. “Fear Strikes Out,” his first film for the studio, was a 1957 biography of Boston Red Sox baseball player Jimmy Piersall called “Fear Strikes Out.” His performance received widespread accolades from critics.
In 1957, he appeared in two Western pictures, “The Lonely Man” and “The Tin Star.” He co-starred in “Green Mansions” with Audrey Hepburn in 1959. The next year, he appeared in “On the Beach.” “Tall Story,” his following film, marked Jane Fonda’s feature film debut.
Perkins played Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock’s film “Psycho” in 1960. The film was a commercial and critical triumph. He went on to reprise his part in three more “Psycho” flicks. He also bought himself out of his contract with Paramount at this time in order to pursue other roles.
In the early 1960s, he relocated to France and began directing European films such as “Goodbye Again.” He earned the Cannes Picture Festival Award for Best Actor for his performance in the picture. He continued to create pictures in Europe throughout the 1960s before returning to the United States in 1968 to make “Pretty Poison.”
