In a recent interview, Jon Hamm describes the relationship between Tom Cruise’s Maverick character and his character. When the real Top Gun was released in the year 1986, Cruise had become a star, with a gross of $357 million at the global box office.
Of course, a movie as legendary as Top Gun would normally spawn one, if not multiple sequels, but Cruise decided to move on to the other projects, and Top Gun 2 stayed a pipe dream. After months of delays due to COVID-19, the officially phrased Top Gun: Maverick is once again making its way to theatres. In terms of plot, the sequel to Top Gun characterizes Cruise’s Maverick as an elderly but not inevitably wiser fighter pilot who hasn’t lost his desire to fight.
The cast of this upcoming movie includes Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Jake Picking, Manny Jacinto, Jay Ellis, Charles Parnel, Monica Barbaro, and Ed Harris. Val Kilmer makes his return as Maverick’s old rival Iceman in the upcoming film.

Then there’s Mad Men star Jon Hamm, who would be playing Vice Admiral Cyclone, a new character. As per his rank, it is more like;y that Cyclone is clearly at the top of the Navy’s hierarchy, which means he’ll have a tense relationship with the authority-defying Maverick. In fact, Hamm has revealed that Maverick and Cyclone had done butt heads in the upcoming film Top Gun 2. When asked about his role in the movie by GQ, Hamm said:
Yes. I’m the boss, the one shaking his finger at Tom Cruise and saying to him that he’s writing a check that his body can’t replace. It’s thrilling. The upcoming film is phenomenal. Talk about being ecstatic. I’m so excited for people to be seeing this movie. It’s everything you would want a Top Gun sequel to be. It’s wonderful. I don’t want to give anything away, but it’s fantastic.
The finger-shaker plays an important role in a Top Gun movie as, by scolding Maverick for things such as buzzing towers, he helps the audience understand how really bold and impulsive Maverick is, as well as trying to establish an authority figure for him to defy.

It’s somewhat surprising that Cruise has still been having fun playing the authority-defying character so many years since Top Gun, but clearly, Cruise wasn’t prepared to take on the boss role and preferred to play the hotshot who ends up making his superior officers spill their coffee by trying to fly his jet too nearer to their heads. Of course, the film also includes some genuine young hotshots for Tom Cruise and his crew to deal with, including Teller as Goose’s son Rooster.
With Cruise refusing to slow down, Hamm appears to be a good fit for the stern authority figure role, as he exudes power while also maintaining the right level of lightness and humor to perform in what is essentially cartoonish and silly universe. When Top Gun 2 finally appears on the big screen, it will be fun to see Hamm and Cruise share the screen as antagonists.
