The Pursuit That Claimed The Life Of A Colorado Police Officer Ended On A Bridge

Police in Colorado say a police officer died after falling from a bridge while pursuing a carjacking suspect. Conjoined husband and father of two On Saturday night, over a week after he was gravely injured during the illegal pursuit, Julian Becerra was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The Fountain cop was 35 and a veteran of the US Air Force. Officer Becerra, his family, and the Fountain Police Department have received “an outpouring of support” from the community over the past week, according to a statement released by department spokesperson Lisa Schneider.

Several pursuits occurred on February 2 at 4 p.m. when police assisted the Department of Corrections in locating three carjacking suspects, according to police reports.

Fountain Police Commander Mark Cristiani said the suspects attempted to steal another vehicle before police disabled their vehicle at roughly 8 p.m. near a Colorado Springs bridge.

Cristiani claimed that Becerra went after the fleeing vehicle and plunged off the bridge into the river below. Police said the suspect tried to leap off the bridge during the pursuit, but authorities caught him just in time.

As reported by the Fountain Police Department in a statement released on February 3, 2023, K-9 Officer Julian Becerra died from injuries sustained on the job on February 2, 2023.

The body of Officer Becerra was taken in procession from the hospital to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office on Saturday evening.

The family of Becerra has started a GoFundMe to assist them financially. Becerra, a member of the Patrol Division as a K-9 officer, has been with the police for 4.5 years.
