Batgirl Movie Release Date Status Revealed for 2022
The DC Extended Universe and HBO Max have a lot to look forward to in 2022! This fascinating multimedia shared world will see the debut of Batgirl, the very first major film in the franchise that will exclusively be accessible to watch on WarnerMedia’s flagship streaming service, after the universally popular The Suicide Squad spinoff series Peacemaker.
This film, written by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) and directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys for Life), is Warner Bros.
This will be DC Films’ first attempt to bring Barbara Gordon to the DCEU. Even though the next solo Batman film is confirmed to take place in its shared universe, Ben Affleck has no attraction in repeating the role after The Flash, which is also set to release later this year.
This article aims to address all of your questions regarding Batgirl, such as when it will be published, who will be in the cast, and what other DC personalities you can anticipate seeing in the movie.

Is a Batgirl Trailer Available?
We’re currently in the early stages of production for Batgirl, so there isn’t a trailer yet. However, keep an eye on this area since we will be updating it with the most recent previews and trailers as they become available.
Who Is in the Cast of Batgirl?
Because some of these casting confirmations are newer than others, this may not be the whole cast. However, Leslie Grace (In The Heights), Brendan Fraser (The Mummy), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Ivory Aquino (When We Rise), and Michael Keaton are among the cast members so far (Batman Returns).
Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life), Rebecca Front (Transformers: The Last Knight), Corey Johnson (Captain Phillips), and Ethan Kai (Killing Eve) will also play unspecified parts, with Kai’s being the most important of the four.
Who Are the Confirmed Characters in Batgirl?
The DCEU will be expanded with all-new characters, including the titular protagonist and the return of some familiar names like Batgirl.
While additional characters may be announced to feature in the film in the weeks leading up to its release, below are short profiles of all the Batgirl characters that have been confirmed thus far: Leslie Grace has been cast as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, beating out, Zoey Deutch (The Politician), Haley Lu Richardson (Split) and Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold). Barbara is the daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner Jim Gordon, and she shows up as a female equivalent of Batman to battle crime and defends the people of Gotham.
Although Barbara is not the first DC Comics heroine to take on the role of Batgirl, she is by far the most well-known among comic book readers. Brendan Fraser, who currently portrays Robotman in the unrelated DC series Doom Patrol, will play the legendary Batman foe Firefly in Batgirl.
Garfield Lynns was a pyrotechnics technician in Hollywood whose hazardous preoccupation with igniting flames led to his becoming the cruel arsonist known as Firefly in the post-Crisis DC comics. Michael Keaton will repeat the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne from both 1989’s Batman and 1992’s Batman Returns.
The actor is already donning the cape and cowl for The Flash, so if that picture is laying the groundwork for Keaton to replace Affleck as the DCEU’s only Batman, then Batgirl may see his Bruce Wayne mentor Barbara Gordon in the same way that he mentored Terry McGuinness in the DC Animated Universe.
Alysia Yeoh, who debuted initially in Gail Simone and Ardian Syaf’s Batgirl books in 2011, will be played by Ivory Aquino. Yeoh is a transgender woman who becomes close friends with Barbara Gordon in that series, rendering her the first prominent transgender character in mainstream comic book history and consequently the first transgender protagonist in a live-action DC film.
Finally, J.K. Simmons will return as Commissioner Jim Gordon in Justice League films (the 2017 theatrical cut and the 2021 Snyder Cut). Like in other types of media, Gordon is the chief of police of Gotham City, the father of Barbara, and a close ally of Batman. And here is what Simmons had to comment about his decision to return to the DCEU:
“I was taken aback when they recently approached me and asked me to play Commissioner Gordon again, in a more major role…and I’m looking forward to it.”
I guess I will call [star Leslie Grace] and the directors in the next couple of days and conduct some exploratory rehearsals… They begin shortly, and I will join them somewhere in January in Glasgow, a fantastic location for filming because it is, you know, Gothic. “I’m thrilled to be Jim Gordon, past and present.”
When Did Batgirl Begin Filming?
Principal photography for Batgirl began in Glasgow on November 30, 2021, under the working title Cherry Hill. Grace posted the first official photograph of herself in costume on Instagram two months into production. Although it keeps the purple and yellow color scheme that has grown synonymous with Batgirl throughout the years, many comic fans have noted a strong resemblance to Batgirl’s New 52 costume from 2014.
During that time, Barbara relocates to the trendy Gotham district of Burnside to reinvent herself. On the other hand, Grace admitted immediately after her casting that she had no idea what comic narrative this new film is based on: “My first query was, ‘What do I read?’ Then, ‘Send me everything I need to study,’ I say.
“I bought every comic and started asking a lot of questions.” Many unauthorized photographs and videos from the Batgirl set have surfaced on social media. In one such film, Barbara is shown dangling a no-name criminal from a window to question him in proper Batman form.
What Is the Story of Batgirl?
While we don’t know much about the narrative of Batgirl at the moment, producer Kristen Burr suggested that the picture will explore a less drab and more colorful aspect of Gotham that hasn’t been featured much in recent films:
“We plan to take the audience on a pleasant experience and show them a new aspect of Gotham with Batgirl. Christina’s writing is brimming with life. Adil and Bilall have an exuberant and joyful attitude that is contagious, making them the ideal filmmakers for this Bat project. And I’m excited to be a part of the DC world, which is fantastic.”
