It’s official: Gossip Girl is a “extension” of the original series, which was revived. In a press release dated July 18, 2019, HBO Max confirmed the show has been ordered straight to series. The show’s creators, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, and showrunner Joshua Safran, would all come back for another season.
Because to a worldwide production slowdown brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, it was reported on May 23, 2020, that the series would be postponed until 2021. The first day of filming for the show was November 2, 2020. On July 8, 2021, the series began airing on HBO Max. On September 9, 2021, the second season of the rebooted show was officially ordered. Season two was shot between January 12 and August 13 of 2022.
Gossip Girl Reboot Cancelled
With the launch of the second-to-last episode of the show’s second season set for January 26, HBO Max has decided to discontinue the Gossip Girl revival after two seasons. The new reboot series, written by Joshua Safran and based on the novel by Cecily von Ziegesar, was created in the same vein as the first programme, which was created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.
The new show picks up eight years after the first and focuses on a fresh crop of New York City high school students who learn about the Gossip Girl website’s social monitoring. Some of the actors featured in the film are Jordan Alexander, Julien Calloway, Whitney Peak, Thomas Doherty, Evan Mock, Eli Brown, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Zion Moreno, Elizabeth Lali, and Savannah Lee Smith.
The new series debuted in July 2021 to record-breaking numbers, marking HBO Max’s most-watched premiere weekend for an original series. In November of that year, the show was picked up for a second season. Despite its promising debut, the programme ultimately failed to capture and retain its audience.

As always, Gossip Girl must end. At least on HBO Max, Season 2 of the adolescent drama comeback will be it’s last. Thursday, showrunner Joshua Safran announced via social media that HBO Max will not be renewing GOSSIP GIRL.

Georgina Sparks Chaotic Gossip Girl Return Revitalizes The Reboot
The short yet successful return of Georgina Sparks as the show’s initial antagonist greatly benefited the HBO Max revival of Gossip Girl. When Georgina briefly entered the lives of today’s youth, she, of course, caused mayhem.
Even Monet’s short coup d’état to replace Julien as Queen Bee on the Gossip Girl revival wasn’t enough drama to rival the original series. Even on special occasions, the original Gossip Girl enjoyed stirring up trouble. The reappearance of Georgina served as a timely reminder that the show’s popularity was built on the back of its ability to generate tension.
Gossip Girl Let Georgina Sparks Stir Up Manufactured Chaos
It all started in Season 2 Episode 6 “How to Bury a Millionaire,” when Georgina moved back to the Upper East Side and promptly started making trouble for everyone. In addition to abducting Kate, she also held the anonymous Instagram account hostage until Kate revealed some juicy high school gossip (even if it was manufactured drama instead of the real deal).

To discover if Kate had what it takes to be Gossip Girl, Georgina gave her the mission of disrupting Max Wolfe’s parents’ vow renewal. Even though Kate had apparently proven herself, Georgina told her that she would be sticking around to work with her anyhow.
Kate did everything Georgina asked, even inciting a confrontation between Julien and Audrey because she wanted to get rid of Georgina and regain control of Gossip Girl. Unlike Georgina, however, Kate has always had a conscience; when she had second thoughts about interfering in Julien and Audrey’s deteriorating friendship, Georgina coerced Kate’s Gossip Girl colleague Jordan into doing the dirty deed.
Jordan told Kate that Georgina intended to drug Aki and Julien at the Pen America luncheon so that she could snap incriminating images of them during the event, all in an effort to exacerbate Julien’s animosity with Audrey. Kate, who had moral objections about drugging pupils to stop Georgina, instead spread rumours that she and Jordan were having an affair.
