Kristen Welker Husband: Who is the Man Behind the NBC News Star?

It’s no secret that Kristen Welker is amazing. According to NBC 10 Boston, the Harvard graduate wanted to be a journalist since sixth grade, and she has achieved that dream many times. After interning on The TODAY Show in her senior year of college, Kristen got a job at KRCR in Redding, California.

She then went back to her hometown of Philadelphia, where she worked as a reporter at the NBC Philadelphia station WCAU.

This led her to a job at NBC News and eventually the important position of White House Correspondent. Two decades after starting on TODAY, Kristen became a co-anchor of Weekend TODAY.

In September 2023, she reached a new milestone by taking over as the host of Meet the Press, replacing Chuck Todd. Luckily, she has strong support at home. So, who is Kristen Welker’s husband? Let’s get to know him.

Kristen was feeling carefully hopeful on her first date with her now-husband, John Hughes. Before this, she had almost given up on finding a partner and having children. She told The New York Times that it “might not happen for her.” But when mutual friends set her up with John, she decided to give it a try.

In October 2014, Kristen was visiting her parents in Philadelphia and met John for a dinner date. He was a marketing director at Merck in Philadelphia and didn’t know who Kristen was. John told the outlet, “When she got out of the car, I immediately felt like I was out of my league.”

He planned to make her laugh, and it worked. They talked for hours, and she almost missed the last train back to Washington, D.C. For their second date, John traveled to Washington to see Kristen. She was supposed to travel to Asia the next morning to cover a trip by President Barack Obama.

Kristen was very tired and almost canceled the date, but she managed to get ready, even though she was over two hours late. John waited patiently and when she arrived, he gave her a crossword puzzle of presidential trivia that he made while waiting. She told The New York Times, “That’s the moment he got me.”

In June 2016, John proposed to Kristen on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial when she was in town for only 24 hours. John said, “I wanted to ask her outside in a place you could walk by years later and tell your kids that this was the spot we got engaged.” They married on March 4, 2017, at the Hyatt at the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia, a block away from their first date.

Four years after John and Kristen got married, they had their daughter Margot Lane through a surrogate. Kristen talked about this with Hoda Kotb on The Hoda Show. Kristen said she was a little nervous before Margot was born because she hadn’t carried her. She wondered if she would have that natural motherly feeling.

Kristen’s doctor suggested that she should be there for the birth and even help by “catching the baby.” This was to help Kristen bond with Margot. Kristen was scared she wouldn’t know what to do, but she did great. She said that when she reached out to catch Margot as she was born, all her doubts went away.

The day they brought Margot home from the hospital, John drove them 5 miles. Kristen talked to Margot the whole time, holding her tiny hand. Kristen looked at her and thought, “I can’t believe she’s mine. I just hope I never let her down. I want to give her the world.”

Motherhood seems to be perfect for Kristen. In May 2024, she and John announced they are expecting a second child through a surrogate, a baby boy. Their daughter Margot is very excited. Kristen told TODAY, “Margot has told all her school friends that her parents are getting her a baby brother for her birthday!”
