Marva Hicks, a Broadway and TV star whose accomplishments included The Lion King and Motown: The Musical, has passed away. She was 66.

On Friday, Hicks passed away in New York City, as confirmed by a statement sent by her representative, Tanya Young Williams. The details surrounding her untimely demise were kept private.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our dear Marva Hicks Taha. Our beloved wife, family member, and friend will be greatly missed and remain marvelous in our hearts forever,” her husband, Akwasi Taha, and family said in a statement. “The love she had for her husband, family, friends, and entertainment community knew no bounds. We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love. Thank you for your compassion and prayers.”

Hicks, who grew up in Petersburg, Virginia, attended Howard University and has had a successful career spanning four decades.

In 1991, she released her debut album under her own name, which included the hit ballad “Never Been in Love Before.” Hicks would later go on tour with Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, performing duets with both artists.

In addition to Motown: The Musical and The Lion King, she has appeared on Broadway in Caroline, or Change and Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music. She has won three Helen Hayes Awards for her acting, and she recently appeared in Angry, Raucous, and Shamelessly Gorgeous at the Alliance Theatre.

Hicks has been in four episodes of Mad About You and four episodes of Sister, Sister on television. She has also appeared on House of Cards, Daredevil, Search Party, The Blacklist, and Madam Secretary.

Her loved ones, including her husband, will miss her greatly.
