The Exorcist Remake: Release Date Status, Cast & Everything We Know So Far

“The Exorcist” needs no introduction. It is first one of the most critically acclaimed horror films since its release. The film hit the screens in 1973 in the US and created a sensation amongst the viewers. People stood in long lines in harsh and cold temperatures to watch the film several times.

But, the movie also created havoc in the lives of several people. The screenplay of the movie was so intense and spine-chilling that it created physical difficulties for many viewers. 

The film was about a possessed young girl whose mother saved her by the following process of exorcism.

The Exorcist was the first horror film nominated for the category of Best Picture. Later, the Exorcist franchise has created sequels and prequels to the movie. Unfortunately, none of them could live up to the expectations of the fans. The films received bad reviews from the viewers as the films could not match the experience of the original movie.

However, “The Exorcist reboot” is coming soon to give the fans a thrilling and hair-raising experience again.

Morgan Creek Entertainment announced in August 2020 that the production house is working on “The Exorcist reboot” and planned to launch it in 2021.

However, Morgan Creek Entertainment along with Blumhouse Productions, announced in December 2021 that they are making a direct sequel to the original film. 

The production house has planned a trilogy of sequels, which is in development. The trilogy films will be directed by David Gordon Green (the director of Halloween) and produced by Jason Blum. 

Well, Morgan Creek Entertainment and Blumhouse Productions has given the distribution rights to Universal Pictures, which again collaborated with Peacock to purchase the rights for $400 million total.

Peacock has acquired exclusive distribution rights for the second and third films in the trilogy.

The announcement for the Exorcist remake came in July 2021. The first film in the trilogy is in the early development stage to date. But, the production company has officially announced that the film will hit theaters on October 13, 2023

Well, Blum and Green, are quite occupied with another project, so the movie may get delayed.

If everything goes well, you will get the first film in the trilogy on October 13, 2023

The Exorcist Remake: Cast

Well, the makers have not unveiled the potential cast for The trilogy series so far. However, the lead character of the original film, Ellen Burstyn will reprise her original role as Chris MacNeil. She is the celebrity who played the role of possessed Regan MacNeil. In the original film, she played the role of the woman who was living separately from her husband with her 12-year-old daughter.

In the new film, Leslie Odom Jr., of Hamilton acclaim, will play the role of a possessed child himself. He will come to Chris MacNeil to take her help in the case of his possessed son.

Well, the reentry of the rest of the characters is unsure. The film is 40 years old, and most of the characters involved in the movie have passed away.

The characters of Father Lankester Merrin and Father Damien Karras will likely be part of the trilogy film. However, the new cast member will play the role as original cast Max von Sydow(Father Lankester Merrin) and Jason Miller (Father Damien Karras ) have passed away.

Well, the return of the characters is not sure, but surely there will be characters of a priest in the trilogy.

The original story was about a family and it is very much likely that the new film is also about family.

The Exorcist Remake: Plot 

Well, the plot of the upcoming film is under wraps. However, the makers have announced that the upcoming film will be a direct sequel to the original movie. 

Well, the individuals who are responsible for the development of the trilogy film are Blum and Green. They are the person who has also made the sequel of the 1978 film Hallowe which came in 2018. In an interview with Den of Geek, Blum stated:

“[It’s] going to be like David’s ‘Halloween’ sequel,” Blum told Den of Geek in June 2021. “I think it’s going to pleasantly surprise all the skeptics out there. We had a lot of skeptics about ‘Halloween’ and David turned them around, and I think he’s going to turn it around with ‘The Exorcist.'”

The 2018 Halloween film was supposed to be the direct sequel of John Carpenter’s classic 1978. But, the film had missed the aspects of the original film.

Despite the above, the film was a box office success. The viewers praised Blum and Green for the victorious resurrection of the franchise. The fans hope that the creative pair could do the same for the “Exorcist” film franchise.
