Andrew Tate believes that women have no place in society outside the home, are unable to operate a motor vehicle, and are the property of men.
According to videos, he also believes rape victims should “bear responsibility” for their attacks and dates young women so he can “make an imprint” on them.

Throughout other videos, the British-American kickboxer brags about hitting and choking women, trashing their belongings, and preventing them from going out; he also poses with fast cars, guns, and the like to give the impression that he is a cigar-smoking playboy.

“It bangs out the machete, boom in her face, and grips her by the neck. Shut up bitch,” he says in one video, acting out how he’d attack a woman if she accused him of cheating. In another, he describes throwing a woman’s things out of the window. In a third, he calls an ex-girlfriend who accused him of hitting her – an allegation he denies – a “dumb hoe.”
Domestic violence organizations have called Tate’s views “extreme misogyny,” saying they could radicalize men and boys to harm women and girls in person.
The 35-year-old, however, is not some unknown figure from the deep web’s fringe. However, his videos have been viewed 11.6 billion times on the social media platform TikTok, making him one of the platform’s most famous personalities.
Tate has gone from relative obscurity to one of the world’s most talked-about people in a matter of months, thanks to his role as a self-help guru who offers his mostly male fans a formula for making money, pulling girls, and “escaping the matrix.” More people searched for his name on Google in July than for either Donald Trump or Kim Kardashian.
The meteoric rise to fame he experienced was no fluke. The Observer has obtained evidence that Tate’s followers are being instructed to post numerous videos of him across social media, emphasizing posting the most controversial clips.
Experts have labeled Tate’s “blatant attempt to manipulate the algorithm” and artificially boost his content on TikTok, which involved thousands of members of his private online academy Hustler’s University, and a network of copycat accounts. There are now 127,000 members paying £39 a month to join the Hustler’s University community, most of whom are men and boys from the UK and the US. This strategy has earned him a substantial online following and could make him millions of pounds.

The platform seems to have done little to restrict the spread of Tate or ban the accounts responsibly, despite the fact that much of the content violates TikTok’s rules, which explicitly ban misogyny and copycat accounts. In fact, it has catapulted him into the public eye, making it easier for his clips to spread and even actively promoting them to young users.
Tate, the son of a catering assistant and a chess master, grew up on a Luton estate and has made headlines for years due to his controversial views and actions. In his twenties, he worked as a TV producer and trained as a kickboxer at a nearby gym, eventually competing in and winning multiple world championships.
In 2016, after being cast in Big Brother, he was ejected from the house over a video of him hitting a woman with a belt, seemingly ending his public career before it had even begun. Shortly after, another video surfaced where he could be heard telling a woman to count the bruises he gave her. Tate and the women said the videos only depict consensual sex and that there was no abuse.
Meanwhile, Facebook photos reveal that he socialized with prominent Brexit supporter Nigel Farage in the UK and mentioned his friendship with anti-Islam activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, better known as Tommy Robinson. Tate calls Yaxley-Lennon a “solid guy with a good heart” and someone he has “hung out with untold times” in a podcast. In 2019, days after Yaxley-Lennon did the same thing, police were called when Tate showed up at the home of journalist Mike Stuchbery who had been critical of him online. Stuchbery’s wife had a panic attack after the incident, which contributed to the couple’s eventual decision to relocate from the United Kingdom to Germany.
Even before he became famous on TikTok, Tate’s views on women became apparent. After seeing a poster at Heathrow Airport “encouraging girls to go on holiday as opposed to encouraging being a loving mother and a loyal wife,” he lamented the “decline of Western civilization” on Facebook in 2018.
He also admitted to being open about the fact that he had been accused of violence against multiple women, though he was only charged with a traffic violation in 2018. According to an interview he gave, Tate once got into a fight after a woman knocked his phone out of his hand in a club, and a man punched him in response, leading to a scuffle. He claims that he accidentally struck the woman during their struggle, breaking her jaw.
